Week ending Saturday 15th January 2022

I cannot believe we are approaching the middle of January, where have the last two weeks gone? One-way or another, the winter has certainly arrived as the temperatures have plummeted, it’s cold out there and foggy. According to the weather forecast, this weekend weather is here for the next few days – Oh Joy!

As things continue to get back to the pre-Christmas normal, it is still quiet on the community front. But I and those I work with are full steam ahead with ideas and plans for the rest of 2022.

The Horbury Craft & Street Fayre committee, of which I am Chair, have agreed that this year’s event will go ahead on Saturday & Sunday 18th & 19th June – subject to COVID restrictions that may be in place at the time.

The group have been inundated with potential stall holder applications, so fingers crossed, we could have one of our most successful events in many years. If you or someone you know would like to book a stall, please visit our Facebook page for full details of costs and how to apply, there are a limited number of stalls still available.

Over the next few weeks, I will report and give details of other events that are being planned across Horbury and South Ossett and in Ossett itself.

On Wednesday morning it was cold, but I joined a team of intrepid litter pickers in our first Community Litter Pick of the year. We met on Baptist Lane in South Ossett and did our pick on Manor Road, Teall Street, Baptist Lane and Ossett Spa.

Around 10 bags of rubbish were collected, from the roadside, grass verges and from the M1 tunnel. The whole area looks so much cleaner. Thank you to everyone involved but especially to Deb & Andy Nicholls for arranging the session.

If you would like to take part in the next Community litter pick, watch out for details on my Facebook page.

On Wednesday evening Horbury’s new Youth Club opened for the first time in the old Salvation Army Hall, on Peel Street.

Wakefield Council have funded the project. Working with Les from the Army, the club will be open on a Wednesday evening from 5.30pm for those aged up to 13 years old.

What a great facility for the young people of Horbury and the surrounding area.

This week I have secured a small amount of funding - £50, to support a small gardening project at the Baptist Church in South Ossett.

The idea is to show children, who attend Church, how to grow and cultivate vegetables and edible flowers. Creating an understanding at an early age can only be a good thing. Encouraging adults of the future will give the environment a fighting chance in years to come.

Thank you to everyone who read my blog last week, and then made a donation to the Food Bank and Toiletries collections in Horbury Co-op.

I call earlier today (Saturday) and was astonished to see both collection boxes full and one overflowing. Great to see such a positive response to those who need help within our communities.

The latest round of Government Grants is now available. Businesses in hospitality and leisure, affected by COVID, can now make an application for support to Wakefield Council.

Full details and the businesses who are eligible – please be aware that these are government grants and they have set the award criteria, can be found at – www.wakefieldfirst.com/covid-19/

The Wakefield First website is a very useful resource for businesses in Horbury and across the whole district – well worth a visit.

Thursday evening was the regular meeting of the Horbury Dining Club. This month we ate at Bistro 42 on Horbury High Street. I was expecting 16 diners, but due to COVID, the numbers fell to 7. However, the diners had a great evening out, with great food and good company. This is a very simple way that the club are supporting the hospitality businesses in Horbury and South Ossett.

The Dining Club is taking a break for a couple of months, to allow the COVID infection rate to fall, and make socialising easier for more people.

Know your wheelie bins.
In the green colour bin, with your general waste you can put food stuff. This is removed at the waste depot and used in a bio-digester. This in turn goes to make methane gas, which is then used in the gas network.

If you fill your brown recycling bin and have more recyclable for collection, you can place it in a container or bag and place outside with your brown bin and it will be collected on your usual day. This only applies to recyclables and not general waste. Extra general waste will not be collected. Full details of what can go in your two brown bins and your general waste bin can be found at - https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/site/where-i-live and enter your postcode and house number. You can also download a copy of your Bin Collection Calendar.

Did you know that in some neighbouring Council areas you have to pay an additional fee for the garden bin – in Huddersfield it costs an additional £38.50 and £42 in Bradford per year. In Leeds they do not recycle glass jars & bottles; you must take them to the nearest bottle bank!

Last year I reported the damaged fence along the A642 Horbury bypass. I was advised that due to COVID there would be a delay in the repairs being made, as contractors were unavailable. I have today reminded the Council that this work is still outstanding. Hopefully the damage will be repaired shortly.

In recent weeks, walkers in Horbury Junction have made me aware of some work being carried out on the old warehouse complex at the end of Dudfleet Lane in Dudfleet Yard in Horbury Junction.

I have checked this out with Wakefield Council’s Planning Department, and the work is being carried out within planning guidelines. No new planning applications have been submitted, the current works, seems to be general improvements and maintenance of the original buildings.

Some trees have been removed, but these were not subject to any Tree Preservation Orders (TPO), therefore there is no reason why the owner could not remove them.

On the subject of trees, you may be aware that in Carr Lodge Park we have a Covid Memorial Tree. I have secured funding from my trade union UNITE the Union, to purchase and plant another tree in South Ossett. I am currently working with local community groups to find a suitable location. I will keep you posted over the next few weeks.

On Friday afternoon I took delivery of 25 boxes of Foxes chocolate biscuits and a large bag of chocolate bars. These have been donated by UNITE the Union for me to distribute to our local volunteers across the whole ward.

So far, I have delivered biscuits to Horbury library and the coffee club at the Methodist Church. Next week further donations to the Food Bank, Senior Citizens’ Support Group and others will be made.

Please keep safe and take care in these difficult times and if you need help, give me a shout!

Darren
