Week ending Saturday 21st May 2022

This year is progressing at great speed! In a week or so it will be June, halfway through the year with summertime just around the corner.

Preparations are well underway to bring a summer of community events across the Ward. Friends of Illingworth Park, Pride in Horbury Bridge and Horbury Jubilee Consortium all have plans for the Jubilee weekend, more on that later.

The Horbury Craft & Street Fayre is planned for the middle of June with its array of market stalls and family entertainment. Plus, our local Rotary Club and their annual Horbury Show. All great events, created by amazing groups of local volunteers.

The annual Friends of Illingworth Park event will be held on Sunday 5th June, in Illingworth Park. Starting at 11 am and running until 5pm. Free admission. A great Family Day Out! For more information visit their Facebook page or website – www.illiningworthpark.org.uk

Pride in Horbury Bridge will be using Reid Park to host their Jubilee Picnic. A free ‘family friendly bring your own picnic’ event starts at 1pm & runs until 5pm. Join in the fun & celebrate. For more information see posters around Horbury Bridge or their Facebook page.

In Carr Lodge Park, there will be a Picnic in the Park event, organised by the Horbury Jubilee Consortium. This group comprises of Friends of Horbury’s Parks, our local Rotary Club, Horbury Civic Society and Horbury Village Partnership with support from Deb Nicholls and Darren Byford. The event is on Sunday 5th June, with the park opening at 12 noon, with music from Her Majesty’s 7 decades and Horbury Victoria Band, starting at 1pm and running until 5pm, with the event closing at 6pm. For more information, please watch out on social media.

Please note that all three events are ‘walk to’ events with no car parking available at any of the parks. There will be a limited number of parking places for Blue Badge holders in Carr Lodge, but this is strictly limited. There are many car parks in Horbury which are all within walking distance.

Why not use one of the many excellent cafes in Horbury & Ossett to order cakes and sandwiches which you can take to the parks and have your own special picnic on this very special day? We are aware that Flamingo Teapot & Rich n Fancy are both offering a picnic service.

All these events have been organised by volunteers, who have planned the day, raised the money and will be setting up the parks and clearing up afterwards. These hardworking volunteers have been planning for this Jubilee weekend for over 6 months, and Deb and Darren are pleased to have been able to help.

Over the next few weeks, we will give more details of the Horbury Street & Craft Fayre and the Horbury Show. The dates for your diary are – Street Fayre – Saturday & Sunday, 18 & 19th June with the Horbury Show on Sunday 26th June.

Last Monday, Darren made his weekly visit to the Lunch Club in the Parish Centre of Christ Church. This event is regularly attended by a group of seniors. They meet from 11 am for coffee and a natter, followed by lunch and more chit-chat.

On Monday afternoon Darren joined the Governing Body of Horbury Bridge Primary Academy, for his first meeting as a governor.

The meeting was interesting and highlighted the great work being carried out by the staff and pupils. More information about this wonderful school can be found on their website - www.horburybridgeacademy.co.uk

Wednesday morning saw the Senior Citizens’ Support Group hold their coffee morning. It was a very busy and lively event. Around 80 people came together at the Horbury WMC for coffee, chat and a good time.

Both Darren & Deb are Trustees of the Senior Citizens’ Support Group an amazing organisation. Working together, the trustees led by the Chair, Alan Hudders the groups continue to grow and gaining new members.

After the coffee morning, Darren called into the Cluntergate Centre to meet up with Centre Manager – Cate. This was a good opportunity to catch up and to discuss how Darren & Deb can work with the centre and help them achieve their ambitious goals. Visit their website for more info – www.cluntergate.org.uk

On Wednesday evening, the Horbury Craft & Street Fayre committee met to finalise many of the details for the June event. In January this year, Darren became the Chair of the group who have worked hard over the past 30 plus years to bring the Street Fayre to the streets of Horbury town centre.

Thursday was a big day for the Wakefield District, it was the annual meeting of Council and the day to elect a new Mayor for our district.

Before we can install a new Mayor, our current Mayor, Cllr Tracey Austin, needed to stand down from her very busy and active years. Tracey has been a great supporter of our Ward. Visiting on at least 3 occasions, taking part in events and spending money in Horbury’s clothes shops!

Our new Mayor is Cllr David Jones, who will be in post for the next 12 months. Last year, David was Deputy Mayor, and he too was a supporter of our Ward. Attending our Lunch Club in South Ossett, having lunch and supporting the group in the run up to last Christmas.

Deb & Darren will support David in his Mayoral year and will be inviting him to events in Horbury & South Ossett, throughout his term of office.

At the Annual Meeting of Council, which followed Mayor-making, Cllr Denise Jeffery was elected unopposed as the Leader of the Council.

The entire Cabinet was returned with Darren continuing his role as Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Growth, Adult Education & Property. Deb has been appointed as Deputy Cabinet Member for Corporate Services. Both roles put Horbury & South Ossett at the heart of Wakefield Council.

On Thursday evening Darren & Deb attended the Friends of Horbury Parks meeting. This group was created in 2017 and has made massive improvements to many parks across the Ward.

We discussed the grant application that has been made to secure funding to refurbish the children’s play area and to investigate further funding over the next 12-18 months or so, to redevelop the skate park area.

Watch out for the new Jubilee artwork installation. This will be installed in the old shelter in the lower part of Carr Lodge Park. Prior to the Picnic in Carr Lodge Park event on Sunday 5th June, there will be at least one Park tidy up event and mass litter pick of the park and surrounding areas. Full details will be given on the friends Facebook page.

At the Jubilee picnic event in the park there will be a raffle, to raise funds to help create another tree carving and to help fund future projects for our parks.

On Saturday morning we held our first joint advice surgery at Horbury Library. It was a quiet morning, but it gave us a great opportunity to catch up on our work across the ward. Our next session will be on Saturday 4th June at the Baptist Church on Junction Lane in South Ossett. Both sessions start at 10:15am until 11:30am, no appointment needed, just turn up and talk to us.

We finished off Saturday morning with coffee at the Methodist Church coffee morning and then a quick lunch in a local café.

Please keep safe and take care.

Darren & Deb

Working for our Communities, throughout the whole year!
