Ossett News
Week ending Saturday 30th July 2022 You would not believe the weather – so much for a great British Summer, Hey Ho! The sun may come out sometime soon. As we start the Summer School Holidays, may we take this opportunity to thank each teacher for their hard work and to each pupil who have completed this year and all their achievements. There are an amazing number of activities available, across the whole Wakefield District this summer. Visit the Council’s website and that of our local Breakthru project for full details and how you can take part. www.breakthru-youth.co.uk and www.wakefield.gov.uk/schools-and-children/happy-healthy-holidays What a great way to start a Tuesday morning, with Graham from Horbury Civic Society, we set about cleaning the bench outside of the paved area on Cluntergate. Armed with a bucket of hot soapy water from Capri Café, we scrubbed and scrubbed removing many years of grime and moss, some of the graffiti was also removed. After about an hour of scrubbing we stood back and yes, the bench looked a lot better. The bench needs a little more tender loving care, which we hope to be able to provide over the summer months. Deb and Darren attended the Senior Citizens’ Support Group at Horbury WMC on Wednesday morning. It was a quieter event than usual, but the buzz was truly amazing. If you know someone who could benefit from joining SCSG, to give them company and a friendly place to meet, either visit their website www.scsg.co.uk - give them a call on 01924 565859 or drop us a line. We then popped into the Methodist Church coffee morning. This town centre location gives anyone a opportunity to have a cuppa and a chat for a small charge. Why not drop in and say hello. They are open every Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 10am until 12 noon. After coffee, we had a walk around Horbury town centre and had a look at the wonderfully colourful hanging baskets. Thank you to Horbury Village Partnership and the other sponsors for this great display. Two weeks ago, we raised the issues of these two planning applications – affecting Horbury town centre. Planning application 22/01363/TEL – this is for the installation of a 5G mobile telephone mast on the corner of Westfield Road and Highfield Road. The approximate location is by the existing communications box, close to the raised flower bed where the Christmas Tree is located. In applications related to infrastructure, local Councils have very few powers to stop the planning application. However, that does not stop residents from lodging their support or objections on the Planning website – see below for more information. Darren and Deb will be lodging an objection to this location. We feel that as this location is near one of the few green spaces in the town centre and at virtually at the end of someone’s garden, an alternative location would be further down High Street towards Westfield Road. Planning application 22/00733/OUT – this is to redevelop and build on the car park behind the library. The application states – “Outline application for the extensions and renovation work to existing buildings on site, extending and improving the existing office provision and partial change of use to E(b) Cafe and C3 Residential flats. The scheme also includes the construction of a new detached office and leisure building including an external rooftop pool, and various public realm improvements (outline application with Landscaping as reserved matter).” In short, the new owners want to create some new office space, a gym and spa complex, whilst preserving the old contamination unit and its listed building status. FYI the contamination unit, is the only building that is listed. This application does not affect the Library or the Old Town Hall. We are not supporting this application and will be lodging an objection in the next few days. If you wish to comment, support or object to either of these applications, you can do so by visiting - https://planning.wakefield.gov.uk/online-applications/search.do?action=simple&searchType=Application or in writing to – Wakefield Council, Planning Department, Wakefield One, Wakefield, WF1 2EB. Whether you use the website or write, please ensure you use the reference number shown above. We have made a request to Wakefield Council for funding to restore the flower beds, just below the mansion in Carr Lodge Park, for next summer. We are to attend a meeting on site to discuss the options available and how we can move this great project forward. It has been brought to our attention that the stone wall that runs behind the Kings Pub has been the subject to restoration with breezeblocks. We are unsure who this wall belongs to, but we are investigating to see what can be done to restore this wall with stone to repair it properly. The graffiti and tagging that has taken place at Reid Park in Horbury Bridge we understand has been removed. Can we again thank the individuals who thought this was an acceptable thing to do in a children’s play area. We truly hope your parents are very proud of you! Parking is a massive issue across the whole of Horbury and South Ossett. Last Monday, Darren paid a visit to a very quiet cul-de-sac in South Ossett to look at parking issues. This was raised by residents and following a site visit, there may be a possible solution, with the installation of white lining. These issues are often compounded by drivers parking part on the road and part on the pavement, parking too close to a junction or just taking up too much room. Vehicles can park on pavements, but they must not block them. If a pushchair cannot get past, then the Police need to be informed. Similarly, if a car is blocking access to your drive and property, again contact the Police. Our next Saturday Advice Session will be on 6th August at The Baptist Church, Junction Road in South Ossett. The session runs from 10:15 until 11:30am – no appointment needed, just turn up. Once we have completed this session, we will be doing a walk around the area. If you want us to call and discuss an issue, please drop us a line via Facebook or by email. On Saturday, we stopped at one of our local cafes and had what is becoming our Saturday custom of a bacon sandwich. Finally, this week we both attended the first match of the season for Horbury Town FC. This season they have been promoted to the NCEL league. What an amazing match to start their season in a new league, scoring an impressive 5 goals to nil. Their opponents were Ollerton Town from Lincolnshire. Onwards and upwards Horbury Town FC. Please keep safe and take care. Darren & Deb Working for our Communities, throughout the whole year! View the full article
