Week ending Saturday 6th August 2022

It looks like the winning streak continues for Horbury Town Football Club. This week they played an away match at Rossington in South Yorkshire. They stormed home with a 3-0 win.

So, after two matches of the new season in a new league, Horbury Town FC are still top of the table! Darren and Deb attended the first match of the season – at home to Ollerton Town, which was a 5-0 walkover by Horbury Town FC.

Monday was Yorkshire Day and we in Horbury flew the flag in celebration. The flag will be flown in Memorial gardens throughout August. Then the flag will be replaced with the Union flag as we prepare for Remembrance Sunday in November.

On Monday evening Darren attended the Horbury Village Partnership, a group of businesses, local community groups and residents. Their aim is to promote the shopping centre of Horbury.

Each year they organise and pay for the floral hanging baskets in summer and the wall mounted Christmas trees for the festive season.

In anticipation of this year’s festive season, we discussed and confirmed the date of the Christmas light switch-on for Friday 25th November 2022.

Entertainment will start around 4:45pm, with a DJ and giveaways, the illuminations will be switched on around 5:15pm, with Santa arriving on his sleigh at 5:45pm.

Each child attending will receive a small festive gift from Santa and as usual this will be free of charge. With the gifts being funded by Unite the Union and Councillors Darren and Deb.

Fingers crossed two new living Christmas trees will be planted in Sowood Play area and in Horbury Bridge. We will keep you posted as to when the planting will take place. We are looking for a place to plant two additional trees for Christmas 2023. Locations are required in the South Ossett area – any ideas? Please let us know via an email or Facebook.

This week both Darren and Deb have submitted objections to two local planning applications.

The first one, reference number 22/01363/TEL was an objection to the 5G mobile telephone mast on the corner of Highfield Road and High Street in Horbury.

We are aware that local Councils are unable to stop masts being installed, but they can suggest another location. We feel that the location identified is too close to a school and recently built homes.

The second, reference number 22/00733/OUT was an objection is to the redevelopment of the area behind Horbury Library. This area has limited vehicular access and Horbury town centre needs more, not less car parking and the density and height of the proposed buildings is too great. We will keep you posted as to when the applications are due to be heard by the Planning Committee and we will of course report back to you.

You can still lodge a letter of support or objection to either of these to applications, just write to Wakefield Council, Planning Department, Wakefield One, Wakefield, WF1 2EB or email - devcontrol@wakefield.gov.uk Please ensure you use the reference number shown above.

After talking to residents and walkers we have arranged to have a larger rubbish bin installed at the end of Parker Road, down by the playing fields.

The bin which was there previously was a smaller fence mounted unit and was always full. So hopefully this bigger one will help to keep the area cleaner.

A massive thank you to those people who continually dump rubbish down at Horbury lagoons. Over the last few weeks large quantities of corrugated asbestos sheeting and a large chemical drum with some type of pumping equipment being dumped there.

Not only is this classed as hazardous waste but was also a potential danger to those who use the area, especially children.

Wakefield Council will be removing the waste materials in the near future.

You may have seen on Facebook that Wakefield Council have been nominated for a national award. The nomination is for Council of the Year from the ASPE – Association of Public Sector Excellence. The winner is due to be announced later this year. Fingers crossed!

There is still plenty of time to sign up at either of our two amazing libraries in Horbury and Ossett to the Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s theme is The Gadgeteers.

Call in to either library and register, it is great fun and a massive opportunity for young readers to have some fun.

On Thursday evening we attended a meeting of Friends of Horbury’s Parks – the meeting was an outdoor event in Carr Lodge Park. Darren is the Secretary of the group with Deb as a longstanding group member.

We discussed the Jubilee Party in the Park held in June and that we are planning another event in August 2023 – hopefully without the rain.

We agreed to seek approval to install the following
• Three wooden picnic benches – in the lower field
• To plant a Community Fruit Orchard – up to 16 fruit trees, including various varieties of apple, pear, plum and quince trees
• To raise funds to install another tree sculpture
• To plant 7,000 purple spring flowering crocus bulbs in Carr Lodge Park and 1,000 in Reid Park

The Friends of Horbury’s Parks was established in 2016 by Darren, Graham our chair and a group of dedicated volunteers – please visit our Facebook page to keep up to date with our activities and plans for all our parks – including Reid Park, Carr Lodge Park, Memorial Park and Sowood Play area.

There are separate Friends Groups for Illingworth Park in South Ossett and Green Park in Horbury. Both groups have Facebook pages.

Later this month, keep an eye out for details of this year’s Autumn Photography Competition. Organised by the Friends of Horbury’s Parks and the prizes are sponsored by Cllrs Deb and Darren.

There are two age categories – Under 16 and then everyone else, with winners and runners up prizes in both groups.

Saturday was our monthly advice session which we held in the Baptist Church in South Ossett. These sessions give you the opportunity to raise issues directly with Deb and Darren.

No appointment is required, just turn up and talk to us. The next session will be the 3rd Saturday of August and will be in Horbury Library and the 1st Saturday in September back at the Baptist church. Both sessions start at 10:15 and run until 11:30am.

This week’s bacon sandwich challenge!

Please keep safe and take care.
