***Week ending Saturday 18th March 2023***

We have had all four seasons of weather in Horbury & South Ossett over the past 10 days. Snow, cold, glorious sunshine and now a week of potential showers and rain. Have we had any fog; did we miss it?

Monday evening was Darren’s regular meeting of our local Royal British Legion. This month we were arranging the fundraising activities of the group at the upcoming Horbury Street Fayre and Horbury Show, both in June. All of the money raised contributes towards their annual Poppy Appeal total. If you would like to know more about the work of our local Royal British Legion, please visit their Facebook page.

On Tuesday morning both Deb and Darren started their weekly Community Litter Pick in the Sowood area of South Ossett. A team of eight dedicated local people started at the children’s play area on South Terrace and picked towards Sowood Bends.

It never fails to amaze the group the amount of rubbish that has been dumped. Most of it seems to consist of plastic bottles, sweet or crisp packets and alcohol bottles and cans. The sooner the Government introduces a bottle and can return scheme the better! This has proven to reduce tipping when people are given the incentive of a cash incentive to return empty containers.

Our next Community Litter Pick will be on Tuesday morning at 10 am, meeting in the Benton Hill area and progressing towards Horbury town centre and the M1 motorway bridge. Please feel free to come and join the group, we pick for an hour or so and pickers and bags are available for you to use.

On Tuesday evening we attended our Union meeting – UNITE the Union, and we were able to obtain two donations for great local causes. A contribution to the Horbury Village Partnership that will enable them to buy five hanging baskets for the town centre.
Plus, a small donation to a local Guide Group based in Horbury Bridge. We thank UNITE for their continued support of many local groups across Horbury & South Ossett.

We have also completed two additional grant applications for Friends of Horbury’s Parks and the Village Partnership for more financial help from other sources. We’ll keep you updated should these grants be successful.

On Tuesday evening Deb attended the regular meeting of Horbury Civic Society. This focused local group is led by a team of very dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly for the good of Horbury and the surrounding areas. There are many Civic Societies across the district including one in Ossett and Wakefield city. You can find out more about all 3 of them by visiting their respective websites.

Darren took the opportunity on Tuesday evening to join the Friends of Illingworth Park for their monthly meeting. The main topic this month was planning for the Summer Gala which is always on the first Sunday in June – Sunday 4th June 2023. This event is a fixture in the South Ossett calendar and Darren and Deb are honoured to support the group.

There is also the groups Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 8th April in the park between 10 am and 12 noon. Please visit their Facebook page for more details – search Illingworth Park, Ossett.

A big thank you to the Friends of Illingworth Park team, as on Saturday morning they spent an hour in the park, having a spring clean; over 10 bags of detritus were removed from the park. Just in time for the great spring weather to come soon.

Recently, we welcomed a new business to Horbury High Street – Safe Travel Horbury. Well, this week we can welcome another trader – Belles Magic Box, which according to the Wakefield Express is one of the smallest shops in the whole country. You can find out more about the new shop by visiting their Facebook page or website.

Peel Street car park has been the scene of great activity this week. I reported several weeks ago that there was a pothole and dip in the tarmac surface, close to the entrance to the tunnel that takes you to the High Street. Investigation by the Council discovered that there was a collapsed water pipe of some description, which was causing the issue. This problem was further compounded when a power cable was found just below the surface and not at the correct depth.

The power company was called, and they were instructed to bury their cable at the correct depth. This work resulted in the car park being closed, then opened and then partially closed. When the work is completed the entire car park is due to be resurfaced over the summer months. The white lining of this car park plus the ones on Queen Street, High Street and Northgate will also be done at the same time.

On Wednesday morning Deb was out ‘n’ about visiting the Methodists coffee morning and Senior Citizens’ Support Group. These two regular visits are a great opportunity for residents to raise issues with us and a place for a great cup of coffee, natter and catch up.

Thursday morning Deb, Darren and Gwen took the opportunity to call in and see our friends at the coffee morning at Christ Church in South Ossett. It was great to catch up with many people who we used to see at the Monday Lunch Club, which ceased just before the pandemic. Many happy faces and a real privilege to be made so welcome at this community group. This church is also the home of our local Food Bank, and we took time whilst there to pop in and say hello.

We took the opportunity on Thursday morning to drive around South Ossett and we have since reported the following – pots holes on Teall Street and sweeping required on Goring Park Avenue, South Terrace. Please feel free to let us know of issues you would like us to deal with.

Friday, as well as being St Patrick’s and Red Nose day it was also the opening of a new exhibition in Horbury’s very own and one of the UK’s smaller art galleries. The new display called ‘Together’ curated by Graham from the Civic Society and was created by local artists – more on this next week. However please give Redbox a visit, it is located just outside Boon’s on Queen Street.

The display is active between 10 am and 10pm each day. More information about past and potential future displays can be found at the Civic Society’s website & Facebook page.

Several months ago, it was brought to our attention that a number of drivers were using a very pretty grassed area on Vicar Lane as a car park. This was mainly at a weekend but during the winter months it was causing damage to the area. Over the past week or so we have been able to have a low wooden fence installed. This, it is hoped, will protect the area which is a green open space for residents and visitors to the area to enjoy and not a car park.

We finished the week with our second monthly advice session at Horbury Library and then into Horbury for a well-earned cup of coffee and a piece of cake!
