  1. ✅Week ending Saturday 30th September 2023✅ On Friday, Deb, Gwen and Darren arranged a coffee morning to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Relief. The event was hosted by the great team at Horbury Library. Cakes were donated by library users and Flamingo Café, along with a donation from our trade union UNITE. Around 40 people visited the event and we raised £201 for this much appreciated charity. Thank you to everyone involved and we hope to make this an annual community event. It is amazing what can be done when community groups work together. A few weeks ago, three such groups came together and submitted a grant application to the UKSPF. This is a new Government backed fund – The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is a grant scheme for local groups to apply for funding to support volunteering, who in turn can show their creativity and make a difference in their areas. Thank you to the Horbury Civic Society, Horbury Village Partnership and Friends of Horbury’s Park, who applied for and have been successful in obtaining a grant for over £10,000. This grant will be used to support the following creating projects across Horbury – The Redbox Gallery for the next 12 months, the planting of another 8,000 crocus bulbs to create The Purple River in Carr Lodge Park, Picnic in the Park 2024, plus another couple of projects: more on those over the next few months. Thank you to everyone involved in this application, especially to Graham who was instrumental in creating and submitting the grant application. As local Councillors, we have access to funds to support local community groups with capital purchases. Over the last 5 years we have supported – Friends of Illingworth Park, Christ Church in South Ossett, South Ossett Brownies, our local Food Bank, Cluntergate Centre to name but a few groups. Do you know of a local community group who we may be able to support. It’s worth getting in touch, we may be able to help. Speaking of grants, over the last few months we have been able to support the following groups with grant applications for their various activities – Horbury Victoria Band, to enable them to buy new instruments for their youth programme, Horbury Craft & Street Fayre so they can buy some PA equipment and an electric generator for next year’s event. We have also been successful in obtaining funding for two new living Christmas Trees. These will be planted, fingers-crossed, in time for this year’s festivities. The first location is in the grounds of Broadroyd House on Fairfield Road in South Ossett. Thank you to WDH for their support in our application. The second tree is for the grounds of Horbury Library. These additional trees will join the ones already planted across the Ward. We are still looking for another 2 locations in South Ossett. Any ideas? Please let us know, if you know of any open green space, that could be the home of another Christmas Tree for Christmas 2024. It was wonderful to receive a letter this week. It was a Thank You from a very talented young person called Lottie, who is based in South Ossett and her talents got her to the AllStar World championships in Orlando, USA. The team Lottie was part of – Panache Power, became the World Champions. What an amazing achievement and we were so happy in being able to support this amazing young person. We were to start our Community Litter picks on Tuesday 20th September. However due to inclement weather on Monday night into Tuesday morning, we postponed our start date until Tuesday 3rd October. We will be meeting at 10am in the car park of Hickory’s Restaurant. You are most welcome to join us for 90 minutes of making a real difference. We will provide the litter pickers, bags and a Hi-Viz jacket. No experience needed, just an ability to walk and pick up litter! On Wednesday 20th September we attended Dovecote Lodge’s Autumn Gala. This event was hosted by The Great British Bake Off’s and Wakefield very own Karen Wright. We had a great afternoon and learnt so much more about this facility in the heart of our Ward. Dovecote Lodge’s aim is to provide a bed and care for those who are not quite ready to return home but are not too poorly that they need a stay in hospital. They have 24 individual rooms where those needing care can be assessed and a care package created, enabling them to return back to their own homes. This facility was warm, safe and caring with amazing staff who were engaged and very proud of the services and care they delivered to the residents of the Wakefield District, from their base here in Horbury. We have been able to secure a couple of public open space improvements over the last few weeks. The first one was to install a low-level fence, the full length of Green Park Avenue. The tree lined avenue is an amazing natural asset and needs to be protected. The fence will offer protection from drivers who had started to drive vehicles under the trees and damaging the tree roots. Fly tipping was starting to become a problem along with other anti-social behaviour that is often associated with public, open, shaded places. We hope that the new fence will allow the trees to continue to grow and to flourish for many years to come. The second improvement is an additional path and path repairs in Carr Lodge Park. A new path has been installed to allow access to the play areas without the need to walk in muddy winter grass. The path has been created using the same method as the top park path. Using compacted gravel, clay and soil to create a Hoggin Path, it will give many years of a dry surface for park users. You may have often wondered why the path that leads from the Rockery Garden in front of the raised flower beds, by the children’s play area, had a non-tarmacked section. The old section was made of wooden planks and what can best be described as mud! This has now been removed and the path completed with black tarmac, making a smooth and more suitable surface for walkers. On Tuesday evening we attended the Friends of Horbury’s Parks meeting, where we agreed our programme of events for the next few months and into 2024. Most importantly we were able to confirm that Party in the Park will go ahead next year, along with more bulb planting and an extension of the orchard. More to come shortly. However, a plan for early 2024 will include a Sponsored Walk around Carr Lodge Park. The funds raised will go to the park’s friends’ group and will be used to continue the improvements across all our parks. Did you know that a complete lap around Carr Lodge Park is 1.12km or 0.7 mile, so 10 times around the park is 7 miles. Are you up for it? Watch this space for more information in early 2024.
