  11. A real tough game yesterday against a very very good Yarnbury side. Again we played well in patches and deserved more than the 14 points we scored. Yarnbury were excellent with ball in hand and attacked with real flair and speed from anywhere on the pitch. Final score was 14 points to 48. The game was refereed well and consistently by Dan Maynard from the London Society. Hemsworth beat Baildon , our next opponents and are now only one win behind. Thank you to all our fantastic Patrons and supporters yesterday. It is really appreciated by all at ORUFC All support , please, away at Baildon this Saturday and then on the 6th of April v Huddersfield Laund Hill β€οΈπŸ€πŸ–€ View the full article

  18. Week ending Saturday 16th March 2024 During the week we took a walk around Carr Lodge Park and took pictures of the amazing array of colour from the flowers, plants and trees as they flourished in the Spring sunshine. As we have walked around other parts of the Horbury & South Ossett Ward, we have noticed that β€˜Spring seems to have Sprung!’ almost everywhere. Let’s hope that the threatening cold snap does not put paid to this early show of great colour. You may have noticed that Cllr Nicholls is sporting a hand injury. While she was out ’n’ about last week, she took a tumble and broke the little finger on her left hand. After a trip to A&E and a subsequent day case operation she is now slowly recovering and getting back out there. On Saturday morning we three were in Horbury Library for the second monthly advice surgery. Whilst there, we could not miss the opportunity to colour match Deb’s hand protection with the Electrical Recycling bin! If you have an electrical item that you would like to recycle and it will easily fit into the β€˜Pink Bin’, why not drop it off at Horbury or any other of Wakefield’s Libraries. Another great service offered by Wakefield Council. More information about recycling can be found by following this link - www.wakefield.gov.uk/bins-recycling-and-environmental-health/recycling/ For your information, there is a Knit & Natter Group who meet in Horbury Library on a Thursday. The times are 1pm start and lasts for 2 hours. Interested? Why give the friendly Library staff a call and find out more – 01924 303060, you never know you may get hooked! Whilst on the subject of our library, you may recall that we submitted a grant application to allow us to purchase some glass display cases, which would become the Horbury People’s Museum. The grant application has been approved and over the next few months the display cases will be purchased and installed. The artifacts that will be displayed will come from the People of Horbury and will reflect the town’s history and how it has changed. When Ossett Library re-opens it will house a similar display area, whose contents are still being agreed. However, we are sure that it will be of great local interest. For both libraries, watch this space. We are trying to find a re-opening date for the new Ossett Library, once known, we will post on Facebook. Whilst we three have been out walking the Ward, we have noted several potholes on George Street, off Cluntergate, St John’s Street in Horbury Bridge and mud and water issues on Sowood Lane. All have been reported and we are pleased to note that – George Street has been marked out for repair, St John’s Street has been done and we await an update for Sowood Lane. Each month, Darren, Deb & Gwen attend and support many Community Groups across Horbury & South Ossett. These include – Friends of Illingworth Park, Pride in Horbury Bridge, Senior Citizen’s Support Group, Horbury, Sitlington & Ossett British Legion, Horbury Civic Society, Horbury Village Partnership, Horbury Churches Together, Horbury Methodist’s Coffee Mornings, Broad Royd House Coffee Morning, Horbury Craft & Street Fayre, Friends of Horbury’s Parks and the Redbox Gallery. Plus the regular meetings we attend for Wakefield Council and the other committees and working groups upon which we sit. We also support several Brownies and Girl Guide groups and local football teams. Today at our advice session we were introduced to a new group, The Slazenger’s Bowling Club. They paid us a visit to discuss their future plans and to see if we could support them with advice and a potential grant. Hopefully we have given them some ideas and in the near future, we will be visiting them to hear about the ideas they have had. On Friday evening, Darren and Deb attended the opening of the new display in The Redbox Gallery on Queen Street in Horbury. Darren did the honours and said a few words about the artwork and our local artist Helen Thomas. Since opening, The Redbox Gallery in December 2018, there have been some great displays by local professional artists depicting scenes and sounds of Horbury. This display is no different. Helen took her inspiration from the Cherry Blossom tree in Cameo Gardens on High Street. Recreating the branches, leaves and flowers have created a wonderful spring feel. What a better way to bring Spring from Horbury High Street to a repurposed red phone box on Queen Street! More information about the display & Helen can be found at – www.HorburyCivicSociety.org.uk There is another repurposed phone box in Horbury Bridge. Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring the work of this group and how they too have made a traditional red phone box into a very special place to visit. On Friday morning, Darren and Gwen met with Council Officers to discuss the old BMX Track at Horbury Lagoons. We are told that there was a thriving BMX community using the track and that it was a much used and loved local facility. For one reason or another it has fallen in to disuse. The meeting came about as we were approached by two different people/groups and were asked to try and get the track up and running again. So, this is the plan. To form a friend’s group, called something like β€˜Friends of Horbury BMX Track’ and create a thriving community of bikers and volunteers to maintain and keep the track open. We are not there yet but watch this space. The meeting with the Council was very positive and they are actively encouraging and supporting our efforts. Over the next few months, we will write an action plan, form the friend’s group and then start applying for funding, for future development. However, before that we will be holding a series of tidy-up days, once the weather is warmer and the ground dries out a little. To see what is still there under the undergrowth and what work needs to be done. And hopefully from these volunteers we will form the friends group. This is a great opportunity for the BMX and wider community to come together and get stuck in and make a real difference. Interested? Watch this space. Finally, this week. Parking on pavements is not illegal, but blocking one is. You must always leave enough space for a wheelchair or pushchair to pass without them having to step in to the road and oncoming traffic. Please bear this in mind when visiting our two town centres. Darren, Deb & Gwen Working for our Communities, throughout the whole year! View the full article
