😀Week ending Saturday 15th October 2022😀
Let’s us start this week by events from Saturday morning. Darren & Deb had a quiet advice session in Horbury Library. This gave us a chance to catch up with the library staff, who are hosting colleagues from the Ossett branch, during their refurbishment.

We took the opportunity to find the owner of the old NHS Health Centre, which we did courtesy of Google and Companies House. Darren phoned the number given and spoke directly with the owner of the old Health Centre and discussed the current state of the fence the grounds. We were advised that the fence would be dealt with and returned to a safe and less obtrusive state.

As per the post of Friday, we have asked the Council to contact the owner directly and ask him for an update and to chase a determination on their planning application. For your information you can find full details of the full planning application on the Council’s Planning Portal by searching 21/01715/ful. Watch this space for further updates. It is also worth knowing that the current application has not been withdrawn.

On Thursday evening we attended October’s Police and Community Together meeting often referred to as the PACT meeting. Around a dozen residents attended along with 3 officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team.

We discussed the usual issues and raised the problems created by the local drug dealers, speeding traffic and parking, especially around schools at the start and at the end of their day.

We have invited a representative from one of our local schools to update us on how they deal with drugs during the school day. More information will be available closer to the date of the November meeting.

As work nears completion of the new pedestrian crossing, which has replaced the subway outside of Horbury Primary School, a review of road marking will be carried out to ensure that all road users from pedestrians to cyclists and all things in between have suitable space to allow the safe use of this major road. This should include ‘Keep Clear’ road markings at the junctions of The Avenues and Cluntergate.

Speaking of The Avenues we have written to Northern Power Grid, asking them to cut back the bushes that are starting to block the pavement at the top of The Avenues. Hopefully this private company will attend and act on their responsibilities.

You may have noticed that the road markings on many of the roads off the A642 have been renewed. This also includes Twitch Hill in Horbury Town Centre and onto Benton Hill.

Speaking of Road Lining, we are still awaiting a date for the Double Yellow lines to be installed on Stannard Well Lane. We chase this on a fortnightly basis. The issue is simple we are still awaiting the availability of a contractor to be able to do the work. We chased this once again, earlier this week, once again.

You may have also seen scaffolding on Horbury Library, we understand this to inspect and repair some of the stonework and to inspect the rooflines. Work is also due to start on Horbury Old Town Hall in the very near future, to protect the roof of this historical building.

On Friday morning Darren was in Horbury town centre updating the information on the noticeboard, he also took the opportunity to do a partial litter pick in Queen Street car park. Thank you to the person or persons who dumped around a dozen scratch cards, a can or two and the contents of a fast-food bag!

A lot of the rubbish could not be cleared as it was under cars and not easy to reach. The Council have been asked to do a litter pick asap. There is a bin within 20 metres which was only a third full!

A couple of weeks ago, the conifers in Stan Barstow Garden were trimmed and cut back. Fingers crossed that over the next few weeks a new feature should appear in this area. This is something that Darren and Deb have been working on for over 6 months.

Horbury’s Light switch on event will be on Friday 25th November with Ossett’s event on Saturday 26th. We will try and publish the details of the Ossett event once they have been shared by their organisers.

On Friday 25th November in the grounds of the Methodist Church, we can now confirm the following

5.00pm Event starts
Music entertainment and donkey rides
Methodist Church Christmas Fair opens
5:15pm Light switch on including a
new Light Show presentation
5:45pm Santa comes to Horbury on his sleigh, who will be handing out a small free gift to each child, 11 years and under.
6:00pm Musical entertainment continues
7:00pm Event closes

This year’s event is sponsored by Horbury Village Partnership, Horbury Common Lands Trust, Cllr Darren Byford, Cllr Deb Nicholls, and Unite the Union. Thank you to all our volunteers and helpers at the event.

As we start to prepare for Christmas you will notice that the summer hanging baskets will be removed along with the Union Flags – these will be replaced by real Christmas tree with battery operated lighting.

Speaking of Christmas Trees, two new root-balled trees will be planed over the next few weeks. The first one in the children’s play area on South Terrace in South Ossett. The second tree is to replace a tree in Horbury Bridge. The new tree will be in a raised bed, giving the tree a better chance of survival.

A couple of events being held at Horbury Library to help your preparations for Halloween. On the 25th of October is a Spooky Crafts event, which is free to enter, but you need to book. The second event is the Pumpkin Carving Competition, this event is sponsored by Deb and Darren and the Friends of Horbury Library.

For more information, please call 01924 303060 or email – horburylibrary@wakefield.gov.uk Darren called down to The Junction on Friday, who were already feeling the Hallowe’en spirit!

This year’s Remembrance Sunday will be the 13th of November – more details around timings and the route of the parades in both Horbury and Ossett will be published over the next few weeks. Thank you in advance to the entire team of poppy sellers, led by our amazing organiser Malcolm.

Another date for your diary is Sunday 6th November when there will be an afternoon concert of William Baines piano music. The event will be held at the Methodist Church Hall and is part of the Centenary of his passing. He was born and bred in Horbury before moving on to the Yorkshire School of Music in Leeds. More details of the concert next week, more information of William Baines can be found here - www.ossett.net/beyond/William_Baines.html

Last week we reported a sunken drain in the High Street car park. This has now been repaired and is better situated to deal with rainfall in this area.

Finally on Friday evening Darren attended the Horbury Churches Together Quiz Night at St John’s Church in Horbury Bridge. Shall we just say the team I was on did not win and leave it at that?

Please keep safe and take care.
