  8. We asked our boys to make the club proud on Saturday , and they did just that despite going down 67-0 to an exceptional Harrogate Pythons RUFC. From minute 1 to 80 all 19 players gave nothing short of 110%. Sometimes you just have pay praise or credit the opposition and as above they were exceptional. Good luck to the Pythons for the rest of the season. Well played Ossett too. We can now finish the season strongly in our remaining games View the full article

  12. Beautiful day for a bit RL. Its our favourite time of the week when we get 26 kids running round Tiger Park. Only 2 weeks till they hit the field to play their first games. The boys and girls was hyper today and was loud, excited but still wanting to learn. Trainers of the week, Tots was Aubrey Rush, only girl out there today but still held her own, was polite, smiling and knuckling in to every drill. Well done Aubrey! U6/U7 these guys are ramping up tackle tech for their first game. Today little Elliott Drury was really impressing as he is getting more excited for his first game. Well done to all. 15. Week ending Saturday 19th March 2022 This has been a very odd week, as I have been trying to complete as much as possible before I start a two-week stint of Jury Service at the Crown Court in Leeds. Having said that I will be around in an evening as usual and I will still be contactable, it may just take a little longer for me to come back to you. At the police and Community Together (PACT) meeting on Thursday evening, there was much discussion about parking in and around Horbury & South Ossett. Both of our towns were built for horse and carts and not vehicles of the size which are very common today. Much as we may loathe parked vehicles you need to consider the following - 1. You do not have a right to park outside your home, anyone can park there if there are no traffic regulation orders in place e.g. double yellow lines or resident parking 2. It is not illegal to park on pavements. It is illegal to block a pavement, you must allow enough room for a wheelchair or pushchair to pass 3. Any vehicle that is unloading or loading can park on a double yellow line e.g. delivery vehicles to shops on Horbury High Street 4. Having a Blue Badge doesn’t let you park anywhere - you still have to follow the usual parking regulations. For example, you can still get a fine if you park somewhere that endangers people, like outside a school or near a junction. 5. Drivers should not park opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction, except in an authorised parking space – Highway Code Rule 243 Many more details can be found in your copy of the current Highway Code or at www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/waiting-and-parking-238-to-252 The PACT meetings are held around every 8 to 10 weeks at The Methodist Church on Horbury High Street between 6 and 7pm – everyone is welcome. Whilst still on the subject of roads and such like – the Council published its Highway’s Work Programme effective from 1st April 2022 until March 2023. Our Ward does rather well, and we have a couple of schemes which I have been pushing for, over the past few years. The converting of Bank Street into a one-way street, installation of the 20mph zone in The Sycamores and Green Lane area of Horbury Junction, the resurfacing of Station Road in Ossett, to name but 3 schemes. I will update you further as more information is known. The following tasks are still outstanding from this year, delayed in part due to COVID and supply problems – the removal of the subway on the A642 by the primary school and repairs to the highway fence by the by-pass in a couple of areas. Both schemes will be completed as soon as possible. A date for your diary – Sunday 3rd April, at 2pm at St Peter’s Church, there will be a short Service of Remembrance for the 40th anniversary of the start of the Falklands War – 2nd April to 14th June 1982. As a permanent reminder of the Falkland’s War, our amazing local Royal British Legion and I will be planting a tree in Memorial Park, to honour the fallen and all who took part in this conflict. Keep your eyes open for news of a great family event happening in early June in Carr Lodge Park – visit the Friends of Horbury’s Parks Facebook page for more details. On the subject of trees, my trade union UNITE, have provided funding to buy 6 Flowering Cherry Trees. These wonderful trees will be planted to honour Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The trees will be planted over the next few weeks and dedicated closer to the Jubilee weekend. The locations for the trees are – Memorial Park – Horbury, Carr Lodge Park – Horbury, Illingworth Park – South Ossett, grassed area on Junction Lane and the South Parade – South Ossett, Reid Park – Horbury Bridge and The Methodist Church – High Street, Horbury. This week I have submitted a grant application to Wakefield Council to pay for the installation of two living Christmas Trees. One in South Terrace Play area, in South Ossett and one to replace the current tree in Horbury Bridge. I will keep you posted as the grant application is processed - fingers crossed. The Horbury Hookers - our great knitting group have been decorating trees in Carr Lodge Park, with another Yarn Bombing of a great tree. I am sure there will be more Yarn Bombs over the forthcoming weeks. Thank you to our local British Legion for giving me permission to fly the Ukrainian Flag in our Memorial Park. The flag is being flown to show our solidarity with those in Ukraine. The flag is planned to fly until the Falklands Anniversary event on the 3rd April. If you wish to offer financial support to the Ukrainian people, you can still donate at JustGiving, by following this link - www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/wakefielddlp-ukrainian-refugees-in-konin?utm_term=YwRWrYA4Q&fbclid=IwAR1wEsY3dUHQg9Uiticik4ab5TuGO-Vw6X3A66sutYeFpiWGaCt8C-blf1g Alternatively, you can visit the Wakefield for Ukraine Facebook page for more ways to help, including donations of medicines and toiletries. Recently, some residents in South Ossett and Horbury have received leaflets from our candidate in the May Local Elections, Deb Nicholls. Deb is a local resident who has supported me in my work for the past 5 years. It would be amazing to have Deb elected and to be the second Labour Councillor, working in the Community, making a real difference. Following the leaflet drop several residents have written to Deb and I highlighting issues that affect them. Unfortunately, they do not give contact details, so we cannot respond directly. The issues they raise are about car parking and parking on pavements – see earlier in this week’s blog and about the state of pavements in the Fairfield area. I have asked for a review of pavements in that area and will report back in due course. Please feel free to respond to the leaflet drop but let us know how we can reply to you. Your contact details will not be used for anything else. Some more dates for your diary. Saturday 16th April – Easter Egg Hunt, Illingworth Park, 10am until noon Sunday 5th June – Picnic in the Park, Carr Lodge Park Sunday 5th June – Illingworth Park Gala Sat & Sun 18th & 19th June – Horbury Street Fayre Sunday 26th June – Horbury Show, Carr Lodge Park If you are planning an event, please let me know and I will do my best to promote it for you. As well as being an active Local Councillor for Horbury & South Ossett, I am the Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Growth, Adult Education and Property. I have a second Facebook page that highlights my work in the Cabinet. Please follow this link and like my page, if you too would like to know what the Council is doing across the whole Wakefield District - Cllr Darren Byford - Wakefield's Cabinet Member - Regen & Economic Growth Please keep safe and take care. If you need assistance or would like me to be involved in a new local project, please feel free to drop me a line. I will see what I can do to help. Darren View the full article
