Ossett News
Week ending Sunday 19th September 2021 Horbury and Ossett are bursting with heritage and historic places of interest. Next Saturday is Horbury Heritage Day. One week after the national Heritage Open Days. There have been many buildings across the district that have opened their doors for this event. Horbury is no different. On Saturday there will a series of 4 walks in Horbury town centre, Horbury Bridge and down to Horbury Junction. Look out for the Heritage Day leaflet. Copies available in our library, Handyman DIY, Darling Reads, St Peter’s and the Methodist Church. There is a great Facebook page that gives a comprehensive overview of Ossett – search Ossett Through the Ages Carrying on the historical theme, on Sunday afternoon I attended with Wakefield Council Leader Cllr Denise Jeffrey, the unveiling of a blue plaque in Wakefield city centre. I attended this in my cabinet role, where I learnt about 2 selfless women. Namely Sarah Parker Remond and Elizabeth Dawson. Both were founders of the Wakefield anti-slavery society founded in 1857. This was an amazing achievement for these two individuals. As women, it was virtually unheard of for them to be able to campaign on such a subject. The blue plaque is now located in the passage close to Nat West Bank facing the Gissing Museum. The Friends of Illingworth Park held their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. Plans were discussed and agreed for their Christmas and next summer’s park gala. More details over the next few weeks. You can find out more at their website – www.illingworthpark.org.uk I’ll be reporting on the Christmas Lights switch on details for both Ossett & Horbury over the next few weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for updates. Thank you to the resident of Hawkingcroft who let me know about the kind soul who had dumped some tyres in the grassed area. I am happy to say that after I reported the dumping, they were quickly collected and suitably disposed of by the Council. Please feel free to either report fly tipping to me via Messenger or directly to Wakefield Council by calling 0345 6 508 508. Please be as detailed as possible with the location of the problem, it is easier to resolve if I have a full address. A little bit of advanced notice. From 25th October, Arriva Buses are making some more changes to routes across the whole of Wakefield and surrounding areas. Route 117 is the only service in our immediate area with some ‘slight timetable changes’. No more details are given. But if this affects you, please visit their website – www.arrivabus.co.uk/yorkshire and watch out for more details over the next few weeks. You may have seen the article on the Wakefield Express website about the ‘West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor wants to end the “ridiculous” criteria for speed cameras.’ Basically, the Deputy Mayor, Alison Lowe has written to HM Government, asking them to review the rules and hopefully make them simpler. I fully support this idea and I have written to the Deputy Mayor identifying several locations across Horbury & South Ossett, where traffic camera installations would improve road safety for residents, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. On Friday evening I attended Teal Street with a colleague from West Yorkshire Police and a resident of the Ward. This was a direct request of residents of the area who were greatly concerned about speeding traffic. I hope that a follow up session can be arranged at a different time but in the same general location. During the time we were there at around 5pm on Friday there were very few drivers who were above the speed limit of 30 mph. On a positive note, we did engage with some residents who have given us valuable information for our next session. I had Wednesday off this week to attend a family wedding in Lancashire. It was a great day for both the Bride and Groom, the sun shone and the whole event went without a hitch. I wish them all the luck in the world for a long & happy marriage. As they say, the best laid plans of mice and men, well that is what I thought on Thursday morning! After months of meticulous planning, one of the team behind the ‘Pebble Installation’ in Carr Lodge Park was struck down with COVID. However, the installation went ahead and those of us who were able to attend saw the creation of what I hope will become a great future Horbury Landmark. Most of the 300+ pebbles have been designed, painted, and created by children of St Peter’s & Clifton School, Horbury Bridge Academy and Horbury Primary Academy, with a few being completed by adults. I am sure you will agree it is a true work of art! So, I must say thank you to Linze & Becky of Horbury Rocks, the great team from Engie who carried out the installation and to helpers on the day Deb and Andy plus all the children from our local schools for their great artistic efforts. After seeing such a great effort to create the ‘Pebble Installation’ it is so sad that I must report that on two separate occasions people have chosen to vandalise the artwork. Why? I apologise for mentioning Christmas so early but please remember, instead of boosting the profits of online retailers or massive national chain stores, think about Horbury and Ossett’s high streets. Why not shop local and ask your families and friends to try one of our amazing locally owned family businesses - they may like what they find. Our great shops across the two towns include butchers to bookshops, ladies and menswear, jewellery to gift shops, greengrocer to salons, restaurants to florists to whatever else you need. Horbury & Ossett’s town centres - try them first! Over the past few months, generally after my Saturday morning advice sessions I have a bacon sandwich at one of the many cafes in Horbury. I do like my bacon sandwiches and here is a montage of the last 5 I have thoroughly enjoyed. Where in South Ossett can I buy a bacon sandwich on a Saturday morning? On Sunday morning our local Rotary Club held a fundraising sponsored walk in Carr Lodge Park. This was to raise funds for Wakefield Hospice. You had two options to help and take part. You could take a sponsor form and complete two laps around the park a total walk of circa 2km (a mile and a bit in old money) or you could take the same sponsor form and walk from Carr Lodge Park to Thornes Park in Wakefield. I chose the 2km walk around the park. It rained, but it was a great way to start off my Sunday morning. Well done to everyone who took part and a big thank you to our local Rotary Club for their efforts in organising this event for a much needed Hospice. Please keep safe and take care in these difficult times and if you need help, give me a shout! Darren View the full article
