Ossett News
Week ending Saturday 16th October 2021 In the two years or so of writing my weekly blog, I have not started with an event that has occurred outside of Horbury & South Ossett. This blog is different. Yesterday a Member of Parliament, whist working and doing the job he is paid to do, was murdered. Politics apart, this was a man with a wife, children, family and a proper job. He was only doing his proper job! It is now being reported that this was a terrorist attack. Why does a single man, doing his legitimate job, supporting the people of his constituency become the target of a terrorist attack? It’s not popular to like a politician, but most of us are just trying to help! My thoughts are with the family of the late Sir David Amess, RIP. As I am sure you are aware I hold two monthly advice sessions and this morning I held my Horbury session. Not too busy, but I was joined by a resident, who thanked me for being there and for the accessibility to residents. I will continue to do this. Whist in Horbury Library I was impressed to see two different displays of books. The first one for the cooking and preparation of ‘Warming Comfort Foods’ a great idea for the onset of a cold winter. The second display was for Hallowe’en. Around 20 different children’s books are available for loan. A great way to encourage children to read at this spooky time of year. Speaking of Hallowe’en, the annual Pumpkin Carving will be open from next Thursday. Pumpkins will be delivered in the morning and should be available for collection from lunchtime. This is the 3rd year in which I have been involved and sponsored this event as it goes from strength to strength. The pumpkins are free of charge and should be carved and returned by 11am Saturday 30th October. The competition will be judged at 12 noon on that date. There will be 2 age groups. Under 6 years of age and 7 to 11 years old. A first and second prize in each age group of a £10 and £5 book token for use in Darling Reads on Horbury High Street will be given. A date for your diary. Next Saturday, local author Colin Hirst will be in Horbury Library from 10:30am signing copies of his new children’s book. The book is called Ambra’s World. It features a blackbird, a cat, workmen and a most unusual animal. Please contact Horbury Library for more information. But feel free to visit both our amazing libraries, they are genuinely a fount of all knowledge, at the heart of our two communities! Do you live in the Wakefield district and access Government benefits? You may be entitled to other benefits, and these could be backdated. Also, when the Universal Credit uplift ended at the end of September, you may still be able to access other benefits. You can talk directly to Wakefield Council, who may be able to help you with advice and support. It is always worth visiting their website or giving them a call www.Wakefield.gov.uk/more-money-in-my-pocket/benefit-support or call 0345 8 506 506. On Saturday morning, I went for a walk in Memorial Gardens and was dismayed at the amount of rubbish. Most of this looked to be from a drinking party, held on Friday evening. All of the cans were within 5 metres of bins! There was also a white carrier bag, which was full of what appeared to be dumped plastic packaging, no names or addresses were found. No respect for this wonderful green space, which is for residents to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. If you visit our Memorial Park, you may see a couple of yellow spray paint crosses on the paved areas around the Memorial. This is to identify paving stones that are to be replaced by Wakefield Council over the next few weeks, in time for Remembrance Sunday. Did you know that you can recycle food waste? This can be done by simply putting the waste food into your green general waste bin. At the Recycling Centre the waste food is removed by machinery and is sent to an anaerobic digester, which in turn creates gas to power a turbine and create clean electricity into the National Grid. Earlier in the week I joined the second ever Horbury Civic Society Dining Club. This month’s event was held at Ego at the Bull’s Head. A great evening was had by all the diners, and they are looking forward to our next date with a local restaurant. As you know I am partial to a bacon sandwich on a Saturday morning. So far, I have eaten in several places and enjoyed a great selection of sandwiches. This morning was no different as I made a return visit to a local café and had a great bacon and mushroom butty. A great way to start the weekend! The Senior Citizens’ Support Group have issued a poster from the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership. The poster gives information about how to access the NHS as we exit from the COVID pandemic. Here is a small version of the poster, the full-size poster is available on my Facebook page, it’s worth a read as it gives some important information. If you think that someone is trying to trick you into handing over money or personal details over the telephone, STOP, hang up and do not give them any information. Then, DIAL 159 from any telephone. This number is easy to remember and is usually part of your call package. Dialling this number will enable you to speak to your bank and tell them what has happened. Most of the UK’s big banks are part of this pilot scheme and are there to help you stop scams and fraud. If in doubt hang-up and dial 159! Earlier this month, I mentioned that the Pelican Crossing outside of Horbury Academy by Carr Lodge Park was due to be replaced. I am pleased to be able to say that a new Toucan Crossing, that is a Pelican Crossing but slightly bigger and a raised speed table will be installed. Work will start in the next 7-10 days, weather permitting, and should last for around 4 weeks. Planning notices have already been erected around the crossing site. During the installation period, temporary lights will operate at key times. I will provide more information as we get closer to the installation start date. Two great community groups held their monthly meetings earlier in the week. The Royal British Legion held their Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Sunday planning meeting. A date for your diary is Remembrance Sunday – 14th November. More details in the next few weeks about the parades in Horbury and Ossett. Friends of Illingworth Park met in the Prince of Wales pub, Christmas events were high on the agenda. Next week I’ll give details of the light switch-on events in both Horbury & Ossett and how you’ll be able to take part. Please keep safe and take care in these difficult times and if you need help, give me a shout! Darren View the full article
