Ossett News
Week ending Saturday 30th October 2021 This week has ended with two great Hallowe’en events, one hosted by Horbury Library and the other in the Baptist Church in South Ossett. Both had similar themes, pumpkin carvings by children and I’m guessing with a little help from their mums & dads. I sponsored the event at Horbury Library providing the pumpkins and prizes. Here is a montage picture of some of the entries into both competitions. Earlier in the week I attended the official launch of the Wakefield British Legion’s Poppy Appeal for 2021 with the Mayor, on the steps of Wakefield Town Hall. This is a very special year for the poppy appeal as it is the Centenary of the Royal British Legion. Our very own Horbury, Sitlington and Ossett British Legions will be selling poppies across all of our local communities at their usual locations. I am honoured to be a Vice President of this truly amazing and dedicated organisation. Please watch out for our local team selling poppies and if you are able, please offer your support and wear your poppy with great pride. Wearing a poppy is a show of support for the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families. It represents all those who lost their lives on active service in all conflicts; from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day. It also honours the contribution of civilian services and the uniformed services which contribute to national peace and security and acknowledges innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism. More information about the Royal British Legion can be found at - www.britishlegion.org.uk On Wednesday evening, the Wakefield Express held their annual Business Excellence Awards evening at the Theatre Royal on Westgate in Wakefield. The host for this great evening was ex-BBC Look North’s legend presenter Harry Gration. Harry was a great host and made the evening very special. An amazing range of businesses, big and small from across the Wakefield District were showcased. To be nominated you had to be a successful business, therefore you were already a winner. Horbury’s very own ØL café and bar was nominated in the Leisure Retail Business of the Year Category. Congratulations to all those who were nominated, to all the winners great and small and to the sponsors of the event. These were the Wakefield Express, Wakefield College, Haribo and Wakefield First. If you are a regular visitor to Carr Lodge Park you may have noticed a new tree has been planted. The new native tree can be found by walking the path from the Pebble artwork towards Stannard Well Lane, on the left-hand side about 3 metres from the path. The tree planted by Wakefield Council is one of 20 plus being planted across the district to remember those who have lost their lives during the COVID-19 Pandemic. A sign will be installed over the next few weeks. I am working with the Friends of Illingworth Park and Pride in Horbury Bridge to identify two more locations for two additional trees. More on this over the next few months. On Friday afternoon I joined a group of around 15 people to plant 25kg of daffodil bulbs in Carr Lodge Park. The bulbs were purchased by the Friends of Horbury’s Parks. This is the second year running that bulbs have been planted - over 4,000 crocus and 2,000+ daffodils in our local parks, with more to come. The next time you and your family are out for a walk in one of our great parks, down at the lagoons or just having a quick trek somewhere, why not collect some conkers, sweet chestnuts, or other tree seeds? Put them in a paper bag or old envelope, take them to Horbury or Ossett Library and place them in the tree seed collection boxes. The recent work carried out at the bottom of Storrs Hill to restore power to streetlights in this area appears to have failed. The lights are not working once more. This has been reported to the power company, who have 20 days to rectify the problem, which may result in a road closure once again! On the subject of roadworks, the ones on the A642 by-pass by the junction for the Avenues and outside the nursery school, are being carried out by Yorkshire Water and not Wakefield Council. There appears to be no work being done, yet traffic is being disrupted by their installation of 3-way traffic lights. I am aware that several road users have contacted Yorkshire Water and complained directly about this disruption to this busy road. I have referred the issue to Wakefield Council’s Highways Team and asked them to speak with Yorkshire Water. The works are due to be completed by the 11th of November! The installation of the new pedestrian crossing on Wakefield Road outside of Horbury Academy is progressing well. This is a major piece of planned maintenance and will improve the safety of students and others on this busy road. Earlier in the week, Wakefield Council Leader Cllr Denise Jeffery wrote to Government Ministers regarding increasing energy costs affecting local businesses. Across the Wakefield district we have many heavy industries who are very energy intensive. In Horbury & South Ossett we have many small to medium sized businesses who too are very energy reliant. Businesses need support as they are major employers across the district. The last thing we need is another round of lay-offs or redundancies as businesses fail due to lack of support in these difficult times. I will keep you posted as and when the Leader receives a response from HM Government and what action they propose. This year there will be an additional Garden Waste Bin collection in November for those of you in Horbury & South Ossett who have a bin. The actual date of your extra collection can be found by using this website and your postcode - www.wakefield.gov.uk/site/where-i-live If you are unable to use this service, drop me a message on Facebook and I will have a look for you. Following the tragic death of Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, I will not be carrying out my Saturday morning surgeries for the next few weeks. I hope to be able to re-start them in December.
