Week ending Sunday 14th November 2021

I am going to start this week’s blog with details of our Remembrance Sunday services and parades.

Horbury and Ossett have a great tradition of supporting our local Royal British Legion with parades and services. Horbury’s event takes place on Remembrance Sunday morning with Ossett’s following in the afternoon.

In my role as a Vice President of the Horbury, Sitlington and Ossett Royal British Legion, I led the two Horbury Parades. They were both extremely well attended. With a near full to capacity St Peter’s Church and many hundreds of adults and children at the later service in Memorial Park.

I also understand that the afternoon event in Ossett was well attended and did the town proud.

Both events were attended by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire and many local community groups. They all laid wreaths and paid their respects either at church or in our Memorial Park.

Memorial Park this year was simply decorated with around 70 large poppies, many painted stones from Horbury Rocks and dozen upon dozen simple wooden crosses bearing the names of the fallen of Horbury. Thank you to Deb & Andy Nicholls & Malcolm Hudson for their help & assistance.

On Remembrance Day itself on Thursday, I attended the service at the Memorial in Reid Park in Horbury Bridge. The service was led by the children and staff of Horbury Bridge Primary School. The service was very moving, and the children were magnificent.

Thank you to everyone involved in the Memorial Services this week.

This year is also the 100th birthday of the Royal British Legion, and as a commemoration of this we have planted a new prunus tree in Horbury’s Memorial Park. Hopefully in years to come this will be a great colourful reminder of the RBL and its great work.

On Tuesday evening I attended the Annual General Meeting of Wakefield Anglers’ Club. I attended this as a visitor and to support the anglers who fish the waters of Horbury Lagoons.

It appears that the Wakefield Anglers’ Club are to give up the stewardship of Horbury Lagoons in the New Year. This means that Wakefield Council as landlords for the site are looking for a new angling club. I will keep you posted as this story develops over the coming months. Hopefully a new Horbury based club can be established.

On Wednesday morning I attended the launch of the School Street project on Westwood Road and Queen’s Walk. This is a joint project between Wakefield Council, South Parade School and West Yorkshire Police.

The basic idea is to encourage pupils and parents to walk to school and not drive. To this end, the two streets are now resident permit holders only during dropping off and school pick-up times. The projects seemed to have the support of many local residents, parents and the school.

Thursday afternoon was the Senior Citizens’ Support Group’s Remembrance tea and 1940’s entertainment afternoon.

This great event was attended by around 200 people who enjoyed themselves with lunch and a good old singsong. But they also remembered the fallen with a 2-minute silence and their own act of Remembrance.

Thursday evening was one of our regular Police and Community Together meetings – PACT. The meeting was poorly attended with 2 PCSO’s, me and one resident present.

However, we had a conversation about problematic car parking on and around the by-pass close to the Avenues and California Drive.

Have you ever seen the two large brass plaques in the entrance vestibule of Horbury Old Town Hall? A few weeks ago, I reported these to the Council and asked that they be cleaned.

This has now been done and they look truly spectacular. The first plaque commemorates the official opening of the Town Hall on 30th July 1902 by the Council’s Chairman Joshua Harrop Esquire.

The second plaque is to Honour the Brave men of Horbury who served in the South African War of 1899 to 1902 and 29 men are listed. The plaques were paid for by public donations and is a great way to remember those of that conflict.

Thursday evening finished a very busy day with the third outing of the recently formed Horbury Civic Society Dining Club. Our restaurant of choice this month was Nostalgic Kitchen at the Shepherds Arms. Personally, I can wholeheartedly recommend this menu and a great place for a night out with friends.

Christmas is fast approaching and Horbury’s Christmas Light Switch on is on Friday 26th November. Ossett’s event follows on Saturday 27th November.

The Horbury event starts at 4:45pm with the opening of the Methodist Church Christmas fayre, with indoor stalls, outdoor entertainment and donkeys for the children in the Church’s car park.

The Christmas Lights will be switched on at 5:15pm prompt so that Santa can arrive on his sleigh at 5:45pm. Santa will start to give out his gift to Children under 12 years of age from 5:55pm.

The whole event will continue until 6:50pm when everyone is wished a Very Happy & Merry Christmas.

This year’s event is sponsored by Horbury Common Land Trust, Unite the Union and me.

On Saturday afternoon after working on the poppy installation, I paid a visit to St Mary’s Church Christmas Fayre.

I was truly amazed at how busy this event was and the great range of craft stalls available. I did my bit and started to do my Christmas shopping.

I am sure you have seen the very tragic news of a car crash on Benton Hill in the early hours of Saturday morning. This has cost the life of a young man in what appears to be a drink driver incident. The Police posted the following on their Facebook page

“Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in Horbury near Wakefield. The Major Collision and Enquiry team would like to speak to anyone who witnessed or has footage of the incident which took place at about 1.19am on Saturday November 13.

It took place after a silver Vauxhall Corsa, which was heading away from Horbury on the B6128 Wakefield Road, lost control while on a bend near Northfield Lane. The car then collided with a parked stationary vehicle and a wall. A 20-year-old male who was a front seat passenger in the car suffered serious injuries and sadly later died in hospital. A 19-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink/drug driving offences and is in police custody.

Anyone who has information, or any dashcam or other footage which may assist the police is asked to contact MCET on 101 referencing police log 117 of November 13.”

Very sad news and my thoughts are with the young man’s family. I will keep you posted as this terrible incident unfolds.

Please keep safe and take care in these difficult times and if you need help, give me a shout!

Darren
