Week ending Sunday 21st November 2021

This week has been the quiet before the Christmas round of mice pies and Santa events come to each and every one of us. Hence the shorter weekly blog than normal. I am sure that Christmas comes around earlier and faster each and every year, either that or I am getting old!

Carrying on the Christmas theme, last year saw my debut playing Father Christmas at one of our local schools. I know I really enjoyed donning the red suit with lots of padding of course and my big wellies. The pupils I am told, loved the days so much I have been asked back once again.

There are two great Christmas events this week here in Horbury and Ossett. Santa Comes to Horbury & Christmas light switch is Friday. The Ossett Christmas Market and light switch on is on Saturday and is a full day event.

The timings for Horbury’s Friday event are –
• 4:45pm Methodist Church Christmas Fayre, music and entertainment and donkey rides
• 5:15pm Horbury light switch on
• 5:45pm Santa arrives on his sleigh
• 5:55pm Meet Santa and get your free Selection Box & take your pictures with Santa
• 6:50pm Event closes

The Horbury event is sponsored by Horbury Common Land Trust, Unite the Union and me.

Santa is provided by our local Rotary Club; you can donate £2 to this fundraising activity by texting the word SLEIGH to 70480. The Methodist Church Fayre is a two-day event and continues throughout Saturday. Please support this local community group.

The timings for Ossett’s Saturday event are –
• Ossett’s Christmas Market is open between 9:30am and 6:00pm
• Light switch on at 5:30pm
• There will be a Santa’s grotto, fairground, donkey rides, live entertainment, street food and an indoor market in Ossett Town Hall

The information for Ossett’s & Horbury’s events is taken from Facebook pages. There is also a great event at the Cluntergate Centre also on Friday 26th November, please see their Facebook page for details.

Monday lunchtime started with my usual visit to the Lunch Club at Christ Church parish centre in South Ossett. This Monday treat gives a group of seniors a great opportunity to meet with other, discuss important matters of the day, including Strictly and have a hot, home-made meal for a very reasonable cost.
If you know someone who would benefit by joining the Lunch Club, drop me a line and I will give you all the details.

May I thank you for your kind messages and support for this year’s simple but effective poppy display in our Memorial Park.

I am already thinking of ideas for next year’s event. Our colleagues in Ossett have set a very high bar!

The placing of the wooden crosses at the sides of the path leading to the Horbury Memorial is very poignant and serves to remember all those who gave their lives during both World Wars.

You may have seen the amazing light show that has been lighting up Wakefield Cathedral this week. This picture was taken from Wakefield Cathedral’s Facebook page. I have already spoken to the team behind this display, who have agreed to consider working in Horbury next Christmas. I would think that St Peter’s & St Leonard’s Church would be the ideal spot.

On a walk around Horbury I noticed that there have been some changes to the outside of Old Horbury Hall. The changes have made a great improvement to the way the hall looks. Thank you to the owners who have made these simple but effective improvements.

This week I made several visits to residents across Horbury and South Ossett to discuss issues affecting their homes. These have ranged from car parking issues, traffic problems, street lighting not working and cracked pavements.

Following the tragic death of the MP whilst he carried out his local surgery, we as local Councillors have been advised not to hold local advice surgeries. I hope to restart my surgeries in January.

I am very happy to call and discuss your issues. If I can help I will – drop me a message via Facebook or messenger, send me an email or give me a call.

You may have noticed that a number of side roads have been repaired over the last few weeks. Many of these have been reported to me by residents and forwarded on to Wakefield Council for repair. Recently completed – Goring Park Avenue, Manor Road, Stannard Well Lane and Woodlands.

I have asked for Station Road in South Ossett to be completely resurfaced in the next financial year. I will keep you posted as to this request.

Work is progressing well outside Horbury Academy to install a new Pelican-style crossing. The new road surface seems to be in place and just awaiting the light system installation. Watch this space for more details.

I will always try and keep you updated with road repairs as the information is made available. If you see a pothole, please feel free to let me know and I will try to get it repaired, or you can report it directly to the Council by calling 0345 8 506 506.

Please keep safe and take care in these difficult times and if you need help, give me a shout!

Darren
