Week ending Saturday 5th February 2022

Windy, windy, windy and wet. This is the best way to describe the weather this week, oh and cold!

On Thursday evening the Police held their first face2face ‘Partners and Community Together’ (PACT) meeting of the year and without COVID-19 restrictions.

The meeting was well attended with 2 Police Officers and around 8 to 10 residents. We were presented with the last set of recorded crime information. The majority of the reported crimes were robbery and theft from vehicles. There appeared to be no pattern to the incidents.

The Police made the point that drivers should not be leaving anything in their cars that would attract the attention of potential thieves and always remember to lock your car.

The issue of drug dealing was raised and discussed at great length. Hot spots across the whole of Horbury & South Ossett were identified.

As a simple rule, if you witness a crime of any sort being carried out, dial 999. You can give details of location and what you have seen without leaving your name or contact details. If it’s happening now, report it via 999 or after the event you can use CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111 or the Police on 101.

Our area Sergeant gave details of the Police work in Horbury & South Ossett and how this fits in with the wider policing roles across the whole of Wakefield. Within our Ward we have a PC and two PCSO’s, who work with a Sergeant. They work various shift pattens but are highly visible. This team is supported by other Police Teams from Traffic, Response and specialist teams e.g., major crimes

The next PACT meeting is due in around 10 weeks I will publish the date as soon as it is known. More information can be found about Police of Horbury, South Ossett and Ossett at - https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/my-neighbourhood/wakefield/wakefield-north-west-and-south

Each month I hold two face2face advice sessions for residents of Horbury & South Ossett. Both sessions start at 10:15 and last until 11:30am. You do not need an appointment, just turn up at The Baptist Church in South Ossett on the 1st Saturday of each month and Horbury Library on the 3rd Saturday.

If you would like to meet with me, please feel free to give me a call on 01924 763088, leave a message and I will give you a call back.

Here is a selection of recent issues raised by residents that I have dealt with.
• Buses - especially the recent announcements for ARRIVA – see an update later in my Blog
• Drug dealing
• Fly tipping and general rubbish
• Recycling
• Inconsiderate car parking by members of the public and local businesses
• Speeding traffic
• Blue Badge applications
• Trees – old and new
• Resident’s planning applications
• Planning applications for the old Health Centre in Horbury
• Who owns the old Church on Tithe Barn Street?

I am sure you know about the unprecedented changes that are happening to our bus services across Wakefield district and especially the one that affects Ossett and Horbury.

ARRIVA is a privately owned bus company who operates the majority of services across the Wakefield District. They have reduced, changed or cut a large number of services at the same time as reviewing the cost of tickets for travel.

The worst affected route is the 117 service that runs from Wakefield to Ossett and then on to the White Rose Shopping Centre then into Leeds.

I understand that Station Coaches have agreed a new service called the 116, which will replace this service on a Monday to Friday basis.

Once I have more information about the new 116 service, I will post details via my Facebook page. I find it interesting that the current operator cannot make the route work for them, but another operator can!

For your information, I am told that the Wakefield District is being hit the hardest by cuts to bus service – why does that not surprise me?

Over the past few years, I have had many approaches from residents who live the other side of the river in Horbury Bridge. This area is part of the Council’s Rural Ward and represented by 3 different Councillors.

The issue raised is the lack of crossing points on the A642 from Middlestown to Netherton Lane. I have to agree that this is a very busy road and needs some attention for pedestrians.

Wakefield Highways department have said they will look at these issues during the next financial year. I will keep you posted via my Facebook page.

On Tuesday evening I met with the Pride in Horbury Bridge community group. They held their meeting in the Horse & Jockey pub, followed by a social gathering which featured a selection of Yorkshire tapas. A great evening with a good group of community focused people.

Last week I completed and submitted two grant application forms to Wakefield Council for the Summer hanging baskets for Horbury town centre and Horbury Bridge. The grant applications are from the Neighbourhood Improvement Fund (NIF) and submitted on behalf of Horbury Village Partnership and Horbury Civic Society.

This funding will provide funding for around 30+ hanging baskets, 3 x ‘Welcome to Horbury’ stone planters and around 6 square planters in the town centre. My trade union UNITE the Union have also made a contribution of £400 to this project, which will be installed in time for this year’s Horbury Street Fayre.

NIF funding is available to any local community groups based in Horbury and South Ossett. If your group could benefit from a grant for a specific project, let me know and I will help you with the application process.

I am looking for a location for a rootballed Christmas Tree in South Ossett. I need a patch of Council-owned land, which is in a prominent position and could easily be monitored and maintained.

Any ideas? If you can think of somewhere please let me know. If more than one suitable location is identified I will run an online poll to gain public opinion on the best location for the Christmas tree.

Wednesday morning was busy as I called into the coffee morning at the Senior Citizen’s Support Group, where I met around 100 people having a great time, with friends over a cup of coffee. This was Followed by another coffee at the Methodist’s Church coffee morning. I was well and truly coffee’d out by noon on Wednesday.

The clearing and future planning continues on the forgotten Baptist Lane Cemetery. Thank you to everyone involved. Later this spring we should be in a position to give you a much clearer idea of our plans and how you can help in the project. Watch this space for more information.

Please keep safe and take care. If you need assistance or would like to me, be involved in a new local project, please feel free to drop me a line. I will see what I can do to help.

Darren
