Week ending Saturday 30th April 2022

Apologies for the lack of blogs over the last few weeks. As you know I had the COVID bug, and it knocked me for six. I am back to near normal and have been out and about accompanying my great friend and colleague Deb Nicholls as she is actively campaigning for next week’s local elections. More on this later in the blog!

Whilst out and about last week Deb and I called into Reid Park to see how our Jubilee Cherry Tree was coping with the dry weather. Well, with the love and attention of the Pride in Horbury Bridge Group the tree is doing well.

Whilst in Reid Park we spotted this wonderful old sign, which I guess goes back in the 1960s or there abouts!

On Wednesday the final Jubilee Cherry Tree was planted in the grounds of the Methodist Church in Horbury. It was a real community event with over 20 gathering to help the tree on its way.
The other Jubilee trees are planted in Carr Lodge Park, Illingworth Park & Memorial Park as well as the junction of Junction Lane and South Parade in South Ossett.
A week last Friday I was invited to join our local WI in their wildflower bombing session in Carr Lodge Park. Around 8 wonderful WI’ers had made their own wildflower bomber and we scattered them on the grassed area just up from the lodge house.
This should create a wonderful carpet of colour in the summer months, all we need now is some light rain, to help the seeds in their germination.

On the Jubilee weekend there are several events happening across Horbury & South Ossett. Over the next few weeks, I will be reporting on them as I find out more information.

There are three, yes 3 separate events on Sunday 5th June. The Friends of Illingworth Park will be holding their annual Summer Gala. This is a long established and wonderful event and I hope if you live in South Ossett, you will do your best to attend and enjoy great family fun.

The Pride in Horbury Bridge Group is holding a Picnic in the Park on Sunday 5th June. More information can be found out about this event by visiting their Facebook page.

The Horbury Jubilee Consortium – Friends of Horbury’s Parks, Horbury Village Partnership, Horbury Rotary and Horbury Civic Society – are planning a Picnic in the Park event in Carr Lodge Park.

This event will be open from 12 noon, with music entertainment from 1pm and continuing until 5pm. Watch out for more information on Facebook and via Deb & Darren’s social media pages.

Please note that all three events are ‘Walk to Events’ and no car parking will be available at any of the parks.

On Thursday evening there was a PACT meeting in Horbury. I was not present, due to illness, but Deb Nicholls attended and kept me updated. Some 25+ people attended and explained to the Police exactly what the issues are in and around the Ward.

It is important to continually report to the Police via 101 or their website, each problem you experience. Only then will the Police employ resources into Horbury & South Ossett.

Last Thursday our disgraced MP handed in his resignation. This means that a by-election can now be called. As the MP was elected as a Conservative, it is up to the government to set the date when we can go to the polls.

I am guessing it will be sometime towards the end of June or early July, but it is only my guess. Once the Labour Party has chosen their candidate, I will advise by my Facebook page.

Our Ward has been a real place of activity over the last two-weeks. The Leader of Wakefield Council, Denise Jeffery made another one of her regular visits.

This time she met with Deb Nicholls, the Labour candidate in next Thursday’s local elections. I think this is the 4th time Denise has been in Horbury since January of this year.

On Saturday, Deb and Darren hosted a visit from the Mayor of West Yorkshire – Tracy Brabin. Tracy wasted no time in getting stuck in with a bit of Guerrilla Painting of the Horbury Shoal whitewall.

We used this opportunity to raise important issues with the Mayor, whilst we enjoyed a coffee in a great local coffee shop.

We discussed the ongoing issues with Arriva buses, the potential for a railway station somewhere in Horbury or Ossett and the ongoing flooding problems in Horbury Bridge and Horbury Junction.

The Mayor has agreed to raise all 3 issues with her team and provide support in our ongoing battles. This is a great positive step forward.

Deb & I called in to our local Food Bank in South Ossett on Monday. It was so sad to see how low they were on stock levels. The Food Bank is supporting many more families than usual and this is expected to rise as the ‘Cost of Living Crisis’ continues to bite and impact on families.

If you can help with donations of packets and tins of food or with toileteries – donations can be made at either of our local Co-op stores or at Handyman DIY on Queen Street in Horbury.

Thursday this week, is local election day to return a Councillor to represent and work for you to Wakefield Council.

Last May, you voted for and returned Cllr Darren Byford to work for you for another 3 years. On Thursday you can vote for Deb Nicholls, who will be a visible, approachable and highly involved local Councillor.

Deb was born in Ossett and now lives in Horbury. Imagine what could be done in Horbury and South Ossett, with two active Labour Councillors, Darren & Deb.

Over the past few months Deb has visited every part of the Ward, she has knocked on doors, listened to and spoken with residents. Giving them the opportunity to raise issues and to ask Deb and Darren for help. Deb and Darren working together on Wakefield Council would be a great assett for Horbury & South Ossett.

If you need a lift to and from the Polling Station, let me know and I will arrange this for you.

Please keep safe and take care.

Happy May Day weekend.

Darren & Deb
Working for our Communities, throughout the whole year!
