Week ending Saturday 14th May 2022

Welcome back to our weekly blog. The blog has been absent for the last couple of weeks mainly due to the recent local elections.

As I am sure you will be aware, Horbury & South Ossett now has two Labour Councillors who will work together to make a real difference in our communities.

Deb was successful in the local election receiving 2,222 votes compared with her nearest rival at 1,522 votes. This gave Deb a whopping 700 majority. The full results were – Labour 2,222, Conservative – 1,522, Liberal Democrat – 289, Yorkshire Party – 183 and the Green’s – 131.

Deb, our new Councillor received over 51% of all votes cast. Horbury & South Ossett had one of the biggest votes across the Wakefield district, with 37% of residents voting!

All our election posters and materials were removed within 24 hours of the polls closing – hopefully the other candidates will remove theirs soon.

Deb and Darren will continue to hold our monthly advice sessions. The surgeries are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month in Horbury Library followed by the 1st Saturday of each month in the Baptist Church in South Ossett. No appointments are required, turn up and we will try to help.

Earlier in the year at an advice session, I was told about the poor state of the pavements and damaged road name sign on Castle View in Horbury Junction.

This was duly reported to Wakefield Council’s Highways Team, who have now started to repair the pavements and have installed a new road sign.

Over the next 3 to 6 months Normanton Street in Horbury Junction should also be resurfaced.

Over the summer we hope the pavements on Horbury High Street will be coated the same as the ones on Queen Street have been. Watch this space.

You may have noticed that Station Road from Horbury to Ossett is currently being resurfaced.

This road has needed attention for a considerable length of time. After pressure from Cllr Byford and residents this can finally be crossed of our list.

Cluntergate in Horbury town centre has been marked out for major repairs over the next few weeks. This road will also see the extension of the 20-mph zone from High Street, down Cluntergate to the A642 bypass.

The majority of roadworks have been competed across Horbury & South Ossett, allowing better movement of traffic.

Within days of Cllr Nicholls being elected, she and Cllr Byford completed grant applications for 2 major pieces of work.

The first one is to replace and enhance the Christmas illuminations on Queen Street and High Street. This £24,000 project will see hundreds of new lights installed; fingers crossed for Christmas 2022. This project will be dependent upon the businesses on these two streets giving approval to affix the lamps to their properties.

The second project is to spend circa £25,000 on the refurbishment of the children’s play area in Carr Lodge Park. This area needs attention after the amount of vandalism that has occurred over the past few years.

After conversations with local residents, we have both lodged objections to the proposed opening of a 24-hour taxi office, just off Storrs Hill in Horbury Bridge.

The reasons for our objections are simple. Storrs Hill is a very busy & heavily congested residential road; a taxi office would not be beneficial to locals or road users.

You can find out more by visiting the Council’s Planning Portal and register your support or objection as you see fit - www.Wakefield.gov.uk - click on Planning Portal and search for planning reference - 22/00663/FUL

On Saturday 28th May, Horbury Churches Together will be holding their annual Family Fun Day at Horbury Academy High School. It will be held on the school field or indoors should the weather be inclement. The usual fun and games will be available, but above all, the event is free. Why not come along and enjoy yourself and say hello to Darren & Deb who will be volunteering on the day.

As June approaches, Horbury & Ossett are preparing for many great community events.

Friday 3rd June is a Jubilee party of the Methodist Church on Horbury High Street. See their leaflet for more information.

On Sunday 5th June in Carr Lodge Park and Reid Park in Horbury Bridge, there will be events focused around a ‘Bring Your Own’ picnic and enjoy the entertainment with your family and friends.

On the same day in Illingworth Park, South Ossett, is the Friends of the Park annual Summer Gala. This family focused event will be a great focus for their Jubilee celebrations.

Please note that the events in Reid Park, Illingworth Park, and Carr Lodge Park – are ‘Walk to Events’ and no public car parking will be provided.

On Saturday and Sunday 18 & 19th June, the Horbury Craft & Street Fayre will be back after a 2 year COVID break!

The usual market stall, family entertainment, children’s rides, food court and much more will take over Horbury town centre. Watch this space or visit their Facebook page for more information over the coming few weeks.

Finally for now, on Sunday 26th June the Horbury Show will take place in Carr Lodge Park. Please visit their webpage at www.HorburyShow.co.uk or their Facebook page for more details.

All the events listed here are Free of Charge and provided by hardworking volunteers – a big ‘Thank you’ from Darren & Deb.

In late April I was contacted by a resident of South Ossett, asking for a waste bin to be installed on Storrs Hill by the bench at the end of Storrs Hill Road. This picturesque location has a seat where you can enjoy in the magnificent view over the Calder Valley and beyond.

The only thing to spoil the view was the rubbish left there as there was no bin. Within a few days, a bin was installed by Wakefield Council. Thank you to the resident who raised this issue. Let’s hope that it will make a positive difference in keeping the area cleaner.

Many people have contacted us of over the last few weeks asking about the forthcoming By-Election to elect a Member of Parliament for the Wakefield Constituency.

Although the previous MP has resigned his post, he was originally elected as a Conservative member. This means that the Government will call the election at a time they see fit.

Usually, the election is called within 3 to 6 months, although according to www.parliament.uk website there are no definitive rules on this matter.

In the meantime, according to the same website “Until an election, an MP of the same party in a neighbouring constituency manages constituency matters.”

Please keep safe and take care.
