Week ending Saturday 28th May 2022

It has been a busy week as we speedily approach Her Majesty’s Jubilee weekend. Many events are planned across Horbury & South Ossett.

Watch out for event details on social media and posters throughout the Ward. Lots of work is going on behind the scenes, but more on this later.

Last Sunday, Darren & Deb attended the Horbury & Ossett Phoenix Rotary Club’s annual awards afternoon.

This event is where the Rotary give out awards to those who have supported our communities across the whole of Horbury and Ossett. But it is also the time when our Rotary Club make donations to local community groups and individuals who are making a real difference to our wider community.

We were told that over £3,000 had been raised and given out to worthy causes. A great afternoon was had by all, and it was a pleasure to meet those people who had been honoured by the Rotary Club.

Saturday was the final day of this year’s Commonwealth War Graves week. Horbury Cemetery is the home of our fallen, 21-28th May 2022.

Deb & Darren were joined by Simon Lightwood who laid a wreath as his tribute bringing an end to this very important week of remembrance.

Saturday morning is when Darren and Deb have a walk around Horbury town centre. This Saturday we took advantage of the two coffee mornings. One at St Peter’s and the second at The Methodist Church. Both events were very popular. The coffee is excellent, and the conversation is always good.

Saturday afternoon was also the day of Horbury Churches Together Family Fun Day. The event is held in the grounds of Horbury’s Academy School.

Thank you to the Academy for the use of their buildings and outside spaces. Without their support, this event would not be as big or successful. But above all, thank you to John and his team of willing/press -ganged volunteers.

Deb, Darren and volunteers Andy and Margaret were the door stewards. During the afternoon we counted in over 430 mums, dads, grans and grandads plus their children and grandchildren. A great community event and a good time was had by all.

On two separate occasions during the afternoon, we were stopped and told by visitors to the event, that this was the first time they had attended, telling us they only knew about Fun Day from following our Facebook page.

Here is a very quick round up of community Jubilee events happening across Horbury & South Ossett next week. For more details see the groups Facebook pages or their websites.

***Friday 3rd June
Horbury Methodist Church
Jubilee Celebration Party. Free family fun - 1pm until 5pm

***Sunday 5th June
Friends of Illingworth Park – annual
Summer Gala, gates open at 11 am until 5pm.

Pride in Horbury Bridge, BYO Picnic in
Reid Park, from 1pm until 5pm

Horbury Jubilee Consortium – BYO Picnic in Carr Lodge Park. Gates open at 12 noon with entertainment from 1pm until 5pm.

All events are weather dependent and there is no car parking within the parks, except for a limited number for Blue Badge holders in Carr Lodge Park.

You may have noticed that bunting has been added to Queen Street, this has been paid for by Horbury Village Partnership, which is the group that represents the businesses across the town centre.

Early next week, our summer hanging baskets and the Welcome to Horbury planters will be installed/replanted along with Union flags; these are also provided by the business group.

Thank you to the park users for letting us know about the fallen tree branch in Carr Lodge Park. This has been reported for removal and the tree will be inspected. It was windy on Thursday & Friday and strong winds are the enemy of mature trees!

While on the subject of trees and especially as we are now in full growing season. We are often asked if the Council or the tree owner will fell, cut back or just trim a tree. Generally speaking, Councils across the country will not work on a tree just because it is blocking light or in the ‘wrong’ place.

This website gives details of what you can do. www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/trees/the-law However, before you do anything, make sure the tree is not the subject of a Tree Preservation Order, TPO.

If it is, then there is very little that can be done. Many trees across Horbury & Ossett have TPOs on them. You can find out about trees with TPOs by visiting www.wakefield.gov.uk and entering your postcode on the Where I Live page. If you damage a tree with a TPO, you could be liable to court action and a fine of up to £20,000!

Have you visited Horbury Cemetery recently? We would like to thank the Friends of Horbury Cemetery for their amazing and hard work they have been carrying out.

Throughout last summer and this spring they have been clearing rubbish, removing ivy, restoring graves and carrying out general maintenance. A few weeks ago, they arranged for some benches to be bought & installed along with several planters.

Now that this year’s local elections are out of the way, we can get back to working with and for residents, community groups and local businesses. Earlier in the week the Leader of Wakefield Council and regular Horbury & Ossett shopper, Cllr Denise Jeffery, confirmed her Cabinet for the next 12 months.

Darren will continue his work as Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Growth and Property and Deb has been appointed for the first time as Deputy Cabinet Member for Resources. This puts your two Labour Councillors, Darren & Deb, representing Horbury & South Ossett, at the heart of Wakefield Council!

Over the past few weeks our Ward has been plagued by road works. I think we all appreciate that the old and decaying infrastructure of our electricity, gas and water networks needs massive investment. The modern need for faster and faster broadband & cable services also causes our roads and pavements to be dug up.

It is worth bearing in mind, that none of the above is carried out by Wakefield Council. The Council only issue permits for the work, they have limited powers to stop the work or ask that companies work together to dig one hole! It is frustrating to say the least. You can visit this website and enter your postcode, to find out what is planned for your street - https://one.network/uk It is free to use and contains very helpful information.

Please keep safe and take care.
Darren & Deb
