Week ending Saturday 11th June 2022

I did not think that it was possible to get so wet, without getting into a bath! I am talking about the Picnic in the Park events that happened on Sunday 5th June across Horbury & South Ossett.

At 9am on the Sunday morning, the team met in Carr Lodge Park and the weather was warm and dry - the sky was looking good. How wrong we were. Carr Lodge Park was looking splendid with over 1km of bunting hanging between trees and stakes. Then the rain started.

It was a gentle shower to start with, and the BBC’s and Google’s weather app, were saying that it was a light-shower and would pass by noon. Again, how wrong they were. It rained all day and some of the rain was very heavy. Having said all of that, around 200 people turned up and sat under various styles and types of gazebos. Some of the gazebos contained full dining rooms and would rival any 4-star restaurant. The food on offer was truly amazing.

Well done to everyone who helped with the event, who attended the event and to those who thoroughly enjoyed the event.

In South Ossett, the Friends of Illingworth Park held their annual summer gala, which had a very Royal & Jubilee theme. This event was still popular and unfortunately suffered from the rain. In Reid Park, the Pride in Horbury Bridge Group held their Picnic in the Park. See the pictures of all 3 events and the hard work carried out by all the wet volunteers who put these events together.
Thank you to everyone.

Over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend other events took place, most of which enjoyed good weather.

On Thursday evening St Peter’s Church held their service to honour Her Majesty the Queen. This was very well attended, and the church was full. The service featured 3 great sets of amazing singers who gave the evening a real positive vibe and got the Jubilee weekend off to great start.

After the service guests were encouraged to have ‘Pimm’s and Pudding’ on the vicarage lawn. Even though it was 8pm, it was warm and very dry! The Pimm’s was pleasant, and the puddings were wonderful.

On Friday afternoon the Methodist Church held their free family fun day, which also enjoyed crowds of visitors and great weather. As the title suggests the event was free. All the fun and games were provided by the Church and a great time was had by everyone who attended.

At the Senior Citizens’ Support Group, who have members from across the whole Ward and further afield, they held their indoor Jubilee event.

Around 150 seniors attended this event which featured an ABBA tribute band, who were amazing. The dance floor was packed especially when favourites were played, especially Dancing Queen and Waterloo! All the members who attended the event were fed and entertained and had a wonderful afternoon.

On Saturday morning the West Yorkshire Canoe Club, who are based in Horbury Junction, held a jubilee river clean-up event. This was attended by over 40 club members; some were in canoes on the river and cleared the riverbanks and removed detritus from the river.

Over 50 bags of rubbish were removed, which included larger items – a pushchair, a child’s car seat, various large children’s toys, plus used nappies. Plastic bottles, glass bottles, crisp packets, cigarette packets were also collected, and the list of items goes on! Amazing to see such a large amount of rubbish was removed, but how sad that the canoe club should have to clear this from such a picturesque riverside.

We also held our South Ossett advice session on Saturday morning. These sessions give residents the opportunity to speak directly with Deb and Darren and raise issues that are directly affecting them. We hold two sessions each month. The first session is on the first Saturday of each month in the Baptist Church on Junction Lane in South Ossett and the second session is on the third Saturday in Horbury Library.

You do not have to wait until the next advice session, you can contact either Darren or Deb via our Facebook page, Messenger, email or by telephoning Darren on 01924 763088 or Deb on 07385 467295. Full contact details are shown at the top of the newsletter or on our Facebook page.

Have you seen the new Jubilee Mural in Carr Lodge Park? This great piece of work was created by a local artist – Liam Staniford. The mural reflects the decades of the Queen’s reign starting in the 1950’s and continuing through to the current day.

The number of positive comments has been truly amazing, and this piece of artwork is another asset for Carr Lodge Park. This work was funded by a grant from Wakefield Council.

The previous pieces of artwork have been preserved and will be uncovered at some time in the future as it is hoped that the new mural can be displayed in other sites across the Wakefield District or even find a permanent home.

Earlier in the tree growing season, Darren and Deb planted 5 flowering cherry trees across the whole of our Ward.

A big thank you to Andy who has helped plant the trees and watered them through the recent dry weather. Trees have been planted in Illingworth Park, with the Friends of Illingworth Park, at the junction of Junction Lane and South Parade in South Ossett, Reid Park, with the Pride in Horbury Bridge group, Memorial Park in Horbury, with our local Royal British Legion and Carr Lodge Park with the Friends of Horbury’s Parks

Over the Jubilee weekend, signs have been installed identifying these trees as part of our Jubilee Celebrations. The trees were funded from our trade union, UNITE the Union.

Following on from the Picnic in Carr Lodge Park, we had a large amount of food and drink leftover. The idea was that each child who attended the event would be given a free bottle of juice, packet of biscuits and a bag of crisps. So, on Monday morning Darren and Deb paid a visit our local Food Bank in South Ossett and made a significant donation of – 300+ bottles of juice, 160 packets of crisps and 300 mini packs of biscuits. The donation was gratefully received by Marie and her amazing team of volunteers. If you feel able to support this much needed local asset, please let us know and we will pass on your details directly to the team.

On Wednesday lunchtime Darren met with our local Police Sergeant. The main reason for the meeting was to discuss leaflets that are being distributed throughout the ward which in my opinion are potentially offensive and contain hate speech. These mini booklets are left in places across Horbury & South Ossett in areas where children play. They feature religious based comments that have been taken out of context or are just offensive.

The Police have taken away the booklets and are trying to contact the person behind them. We will keep you posted as and when we have information.

Please keep safe and take care.
