Week ending Saturday 9th July 2022

It looks like summer has finally returned after a cold and dreary, weatherwise, week!

On Sunday 26th June, Carr Lodge Park was the place to be. The Horbury Show was back, for the biggest and best attended show ever. After a break for the COVID years, our local Rotary Club did an amazing job.

The was full of people from far and wide, enjoying themselves and helping raise funds for the great work carried out by the Horbury Phoenix Rotary Club.

We have no idea about the numbers who were in attendance, but the park was busy from the start of the show until the final goodbyes.

Darren & Deb were volunteers at the show, starting our day at 7am, loading a van at Horbury Town Hall and concluding our day at around 6pm, but this time unloading the van at Horbury Town Hall!

The day went off without major event, except that Darren cut his finger, clearing up the mess left by one of the many bins in the park. Oh, but he did laugh!!!

The Horbury Show is the final event of the summer season in the Horbury & South Ossett Ward. This year we have seen successfully organised events for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – Reid Park, Illingworth Park and Carr Lodge Park, the Methodist’s Family Fun Day at Horbury Academy, Horbury Craft & Street Fayre and finally the Horbury Show.

Without a small army of volunteers, none of the above events would take place. So, a whopping big thank you to each and every one of them from Darren and Deb.

The next event will be the Heritage Weekend, date to be agreed, but sometime in September for both the Horbury & Ossett events. Watch this space.

On Wednesday evening, both Deb and Darren attended a debrief meeting for the Street Fayre committee. We had very few issues to address, but we agreed that we would open up the booking for stalls for the June 2023 event, immediately. So, if you would like a stall at next year’s Street Fayre get in touch via our Facebook page or pop into the DIY Shop on Queen Street in Horbury.

Finally, about events and galas, Saturday was the Ossett Gala. Both Darren and Deb paid it a visit. Although not in our Ward, it is important that we visit events that border our Ward and where our residents visit and enjoy.

We were amazed at the crowds of people in attendance, enjoying the fun and games and the most welcome sunshine.

Again, another big thank you to everyone involved in making the Ossett Gala such a great event.

You will have seen from our Facebook page that there are several changes to bus services in and around the Horbury & Ossett area. Details below –

Update from West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Summarised below are a number of bus service changes in the Wakefield area which will be introduced between 23rd and 25th July 2022.

Arriva Yorkshire Saturday services that were temporarily withdrawn or reduced in April due to driver shortages will be restored as part of these changes.

Unfortunately, the driver shortage is still impacting services, and a small number of evening journeys will be temporarily suspended until we are able to find an operator with capacity to run them.

112 Ossett • Gawthorpe • Batley
Sun 24 July 2022 - This new service operated by Station Coaches will replace the Ossett to Batley section of service 122, operating broadly hourly Monday to Saturday. This will restore the Saturday service on this route (which was temporarily withdrawn by Arriva at the end of April due to a shortage of drivers).
120 120A Wakefield • Horbury • Ossett • Healey
Sun 24 July 2022 - This service will now be operated by Globe Holidays to a slightly revised timetable. All journeys will be retimed 5 minutes earlier. The Saturday service (was temporarily withdrawn by Arriva at the end of April due to a shortage of drivers) will be reinstated.
122 Wakefield • Lupset • Ossett
Mon 25 July 2022 - This service will now terminate in Ossett. The Ossett to Batley section will be operated by Station Coaches as new service 112. The Saturday service frequency (which was temporarily reduced at the end of April due to a shortage of drivers) will be increased to every 15 minutes from Wakefield to Lupset, and half-hourly from Lupset to Ossett.
126 127 Wakefield • Lupset • Horbury • Ossett • Chickenley • Dewsbury
Sat 23 July 2022 - On Saturdays, the combined frequency (which was temporarily reduced at the end of April due to a shortage of drivers) will be increased from half-hourly to every 15 minutes, half-hourly on each service.

Have you seen Wakefield Council’s Big Green Heating Scheme? They are encouraging residents who live in their own homes on limited incomes with heating systems not powered by gas, to apply.

If you are interested and would like to discuss the option available to you, please either email – energyteam@wakefield.gov.uk or give them a call during normal office hours on 01924 305887, they will be happy to talk you through what can be done and help you apply if your qualify.

Bills going up & income staying the same?
Wakefield Council’s More Money in Your Pocket roadshows are helping people like you across the district, with free, impartial advice.

The next session will be held at The Cluntergate Centre in Horbury, on Friday 15 July from 9:30am – 12:30pm for help getting your finances back on track.

Call in and say hello, you will be most welcome, and the team may be able to help you!

The old Chapel on Tithe Barn Street in Horbury has now had its roof removed. It appears that the building has been made safe and we are sure that the road will be reopening soon.

Once we have an indication as to what is happening next in relation to the building, we will let you know via our Facebook page and our weekly Blog.

Next Saturday, 17th July is our monthly drop-in session at Horbury Library. Call in and say hello to Darren and Deb and raise with us any issues that you feel we may be able to help you with.

We will be available from 10:15 until 11:30am, no appointment required, just call in and we will do our best to help you.

Please take care during the currently hot spell, especially around open water.

Please keep safe and take care.
Darren & Deb
