Week ending Saturday 20th August 2022

Five games and 5 magnificent wins – Horbury Town FC goes from strength to strength.

Their last match on Saturday afternoon was against Shirebrook Town a great 2 – 0 win. Four of the five matches have been won without conceding a goal. Up the ’Orbury!

Recently a business owner contacted me about the amount of dog fouling in and around Horbury town centre.

In response we arranged for some temporary yellow painted pavement signage to be applied in key locations. They do not look pretty, but they do encourage owners to clean up after their dogs.

The signs will only last a few weeks as the paint will wash way with rain over the next few months – assuming it does rain!

On Tuesday morning Deb & Darren set about cleaning the brown sticky stuff someone had applied to the Horbury mural.

Thankfully, it turned out to be chocolate. But why would someone spend good money on a chocolate bar, just to smear it all over a wall? Thank you to the business who provided us with the hot water, it made the job a lot easier.

The Cluntergate Centre now has an improved book exchange. This is in the main café reception area. The new bookcases were funded by our trade union UNITE plus Darren & Deb.

The units look great and have already been used by visitors to this great community asset – The Cluntergate Centre. A big thank you to Cate, the Centre Manager, who we understand went to IKEA to collect the new bookcase.

We are getting to that time of year when we are thinking about schools returning in September, but don’t forget, it is also the time to enrol for Adult Education, or as it used to be called, night school.

There are hundreds of FREE Adult Education Courses starting this September with Wakefield Adult Education Service, Wakefield College and local training providers!

Our service has already supported hundreds of people from across the Wakefield district to gain new skills or qualifications to enhance their career.

Darren is thinking of enrolling to do the pottery course at the Manygates Centre, watch out for more details.

The Horbury Dining Club met on Thursday evening. We would normally eat in a restaurant in and close to the Ward. But once a year we travel into Wakefield.

This year we visited TET the Thai Restaurant on Cross Street. A good meal was had by the group of 12 diners. Back to a local restaurant next month. If you are interested in joining the group, please drop Darren an email.

Work has commenced to refurbish Ossett Town Hall, not in our Ward, but a great asset used by many residents in South Ossett and Horbury.

The project will relocate the library from its current, temporary home on the ground floor, to a larger, refurbished and more suitable location on the first floor. This will enable a better and more efficient library service for the local community. Works also include the installation of a new lift allowing access for all to the first floor.

Extensive and much needed restoration works will also be carried out to the roof, clock tower and stone repairs along the parapets. Funding has also been secured to install new lighting to the roof, clock tower and first floor decorative stonework, highlighting the restored features on this prominent local landmark. Investing in the Town Hall will help sustain this historic building as well as giving residents a larger, refurbished library service in a more suitable location on the first floor.

Ossett library will continue to open during its normal hours whilst the work takes place, except on a Wednesday when it will close. The activities that usually take place that day, the weekly story time, readers and craft groups will relocate to Horbury library, from 7 September 2022.

The library and lift works are expected to be finished by November this year, with the full building works expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Speaking of Libraries, whilst in Horbury Library on Saturday morning we noticed 15 new titles added to the Junior Section. Ranging from the ‘Beano’ to ‘Mirabelle’ from David Williams’, ‘Slime’ to Steve Cole’s, ‘Stitched Up’. Something for all tastes, I am sure Ossett has a very similar selection. Why not give both our amazing libraries a visit?

Deb & Darren had a very busy Saturday Advice session in Horbury Library. Seven local residents came to discuss the planning application for the space behind the library.

Whilst the online consultation is now closed, you can still submit a written letter or email in support or objection, but you need to do this asap.

Email – devcontrol@wakefield.gov.uk or write to – Wakefield Council’s Planning Department, Wakefield One, Wakefield, WF1 2DD. BUT you must quote – 22/00733/OUT in your letter or email.

If your son or daughter has a fascination for dinosaurs, then please visit Wakefield Library in Wakefield One, address above.

Just inside the main library entrance you will find a very big, but friendly Stegosaurus, or at least we think that what it is!

Darren bumped into the dinosaur earlier in the week and he/she was very friendly and loved having their head scratched! Visits are free and you can also collect a book.

Work is progressing well on the new Pelican style crossing which is replacing the subway on the by-pass.

The subway appears to have been filled in with expanding concrete and the landscaping has started. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of September with a temporary crossing installed for the start of the September school year.
