Week ending Saturday 3rd September 2022

Following the recent fatal stabbing attack in South Ossett our condolences go out to the family. It would be inappropriate for us to pass any additional comments, until the Police have done their job.

As is being reported if you have any information, please contact West Yorkshire Police via 101 and quote 1668 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be given anonymously.

On Thursday evening we were both at a well-attended Police & Community Together meeting – PACT. Many issues were raised, but the common theme was about the low levels of Police resources.

As we have said on many occasions, we need to report as many incidents as possible to 101, online or via 999. Police resources are only allocated to areas where issues are being reported. On average West Yorkshire Police receive 2,000 calls per day from across the whole of West Yorkshire. Only 5 of these are from our ward – that is 1 in 400!

On Friday Deb & Darren met with our new MP, Simon Lightwood and we raised this issue of the lack of Police in and around Horbury & South Ossett and the wider Wakefield District. Simon has agreed to work with us, to raise the issue with the West Yorkshire Mayor and to lobby the new Prime Minister for more Police funding for our areas. We will keep you updated on this important matter.

The next Police and Community Together – PACT meetings for Horbury and Ossett will be in October, we will confirm the dates later this month.

Last Saturday we spent a pleasant hour or so at Horbury Bridge Bowling Club. The afternoon was a traditional English village scene, with a visiting team facing stiff opposition from the home side.

We also called to present a donation to the Guiding Group that are based in South Ossett. The donation for £150 was from our trade union UNITE, who have always supported our local groups.

As we tend to do on a Saturday morning, we try to support our local cafes – subject to our waistlines. This Saturday was no different, we had lunch at Café Capri, where we sat outside, enjoyed lunch, and chatted with local residents as they passed by.

Before enjoying lunch, we held our monthly advice session in The Baptist Church on Junction Lane in South Ossett. We are there on the first Saturday of each month from 10:15 until 11:30am. Appointments are not required, just pop in and we will try to help. Our next session will be on Saturday 1st October.

Following our advice session, we took a walk down Sunroyd Hill in Horbury and we discovered this lovely little bird bath. Does anyone know the history of this, which looks like a fully glazed ceramic statue?

It was reported at the PACT meeting that the tennis courts in Carr Lodge Park were full of broken glass bottles. We had a look at this on Saturday morning and the area seems to be glass and rubbish free.

Earlier in the week Wakefield Council’s Parks Team spent a few days making a massive difference in the Old Rockery area of Carr Lodge Park.

They have removed a massive amount of undergrowth, carried out much needed pruning and weeded, and boy have they weeded.

This work was done following a site meeting that Darren and Deb held with the team a couple of weeks ago. There is more to be done and we are working on a plan for the winter months. More details over the next few weeks.

On Wednesday evening Darren took a walk around North, East, West & South Avenues and chatted to residents about a couple of issues.

Following the visit Darren has requested a full road and pavement sweep and a litter pick of the entire area.

Regarding things that grow, it was the Horbury & District Allotment Society’s annual show this weekend.

Held at the Horbury WMC a wonderful display was mounted of locally grown fruit, vegetables, flowers, and some wonderful craft items.

The extremely hot weather this year seems to have impacted on the number of entries, but the quality seemed to us to be amazing.

We can honestly say that we have never seen leeks or onions this big before! Well done to everyone who entered the show and to the very worthy winners. Finally thank you to the organisers for putting on the show and allowing Darren and Deb to visit.

The installation of the new Pelican style crossing on the A642 Horbury bypass is nearing completion. The subway is now filled in and the landscaping is taking shape.

The temporary lights will stay in position for another couple of weeks until the whole works are completed.

Last Saturday morning Deb and Darren took a walk around the Queens Drive and Teall Street areas of South Ossett. Following this walk we reported a number of issues to the Council requesting road and pavement sweeping and weed treatment.

Also, following on from a resident’s comment we looked at the road condition at Ossett Spa near to one of the big warehouse units. This has been reported and the road will be patched in due course.

We have continued to call in and to support the various coffee mornings held across the ward. Over the past 2 weekends we have called into the Methodist Church and to St Peter’s and sampled both their coffee and cake offers. This is again subject to our waistlines permitting.

You may have seen in the Wakefield Express that the Horbury Churches Together with their Breakthru Youth Programme have been awarded a National Lottery grant for just under a quarter of a million pounds - £247,000 to be precise

Darren has been involved with this amazing group for the past few years and is now the chair of Horbury Churches Together. However, let’s be clear the wonderful work done here is led by a group of people. Without John, Keith and Gary, this award would not have been achieved.

Watch this space and on the Breakthru Projects Facebook page for more information and how the youth of Horbury and surrounding areas can benefit from this amazing work. Here is the full article - below

The Friends of Horbury’s Parks Autumn Photography competition will be launched in the next few weeks. More information soon, but Darren and Deb are delighted to sponsor this event.

Have you seen the newly laid paving area outside of St Peter’s Church. The paving has been levelled and grouted in. A massive improvement.

Finally, this week, we both watched Horbury Town FC play Armthorpe Welfare, not a great result 2 – 3. Horbury gave a brilliant performance but were genuinely unlucky!

Please keep safe and take care.
