Week ending Sunday 11th September 2022

We must start this week’s blog with a reflection on the news of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. No matter what your views on the Monarchy, we feel it is right and proper to pay our respects to the late Queen.

For someone to have dedicated the majority of their adult life to the service of the United Kingdom, deserves our respect and a Big thank you.

Following the news of the Queen’s passing several major events have already taken place within our district. It is our intention to attend as many of these events as possible.

This started on Friday evening when Darren attended Evensong at Wakefield Cathedral.

On Sunday we both attended the Proclamation of the New King on Wood Street in Wakefield. Around 500 members of the public and local dignitaries & the Mayor of the Wakefield District were in present.

We are aware that that there will be several more services at Wakefield Cathedral, St Mary’s, and St Peter’s churches in Horbury. We hope to be present at these local services.

Much of the Council’s planned activities during the official mourning period have been cancelled.

No official meetings will take place until after the Queen’s funeral on Monday 19th September, which has been decreed as a Bank Holiday.

On Monday afternoon at our invitation, we met with the Matthew Morley, cabinet member on Wakefield Council for Highway’s, a highway’s officer, and representatives of the Police, to discuss traffic issues at Sowood Bends. This very windy stretch of road that links Ossett and Horbury is prone to speeding.

It was noted that in the past 5 years there had been no serious or major accidents. During our visit the drivers were very respectful of the speed limit, and we only witnessed on speeding driver.

Following the meeting the Council have agreed to carry out a comprehensive speed review on this road and report back the average speeds being travelled.

Once this information is available, we will be able to see what if anything can be done. Plans will also be drawn up to identify locations for more road markings. Once all this information is available, we will report back to you via this blog.

On Tuesday evening Deb attended the Pride in Horbury Bridge meeting. As usual Deb was made most welcome and she took note of issues raised.

Plans are underway for Christmas activities in Horbury Bridge – watch this space for more information over the coming weeks.

On Wednesday morning we were busy as we attended 2 separate coffee mornings. The first at Horbury Methodist Church, here we met with those who fancied of coffee and good company.

We then moved on to the Senior Citizens’ Support Group and their regular coffee morning. More coffee was drunk, with another piece of cake!

Here is where some 200 seniors meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, a wonderful opportunity for like-minded people to meet and enjoy each other’s company. If you know someone who could benefit by joining the Seniors Group, why not visit their website – www.scsg.co.uk

Deb and Darren are Trustees of the senior’s group, and we attended the trustees meeting at lunchtime on Wednesday.

On Wednesday evening we attended a meeting of the Horbury Heritage Group and listened to a presentation by their guest speaker. The subject of the talk was Halifax Zoo.

Well, who would have thought that Halifax town centre had once homed a zoo?

On Thursday afternoon, Darren in his Cabinet role was to have taken part in a Sky News television programme, to discuss our new Prime Minister – Liz Truss.

The programme was to have been transmitted live from Wakefield Cathedral Precinct at 3pm. However, we were overtaken by events and the programme was dropped.

On Friday afternoon a small group of volunteers met in Carr Lodge Park. In between rain showers we joined Council employees making a positive difference in this great park.

Following a request from Deb and Darren the Council has commissioned work on the old flower beds, the old Rockery, and the many beds of rhododendron bushes across the park.

More work will be carried out over the next few weeks and the Friends of Horbury’s Parks will continue to supplement their great work.

We have identified the location of the new Community Orchard and the funding for this great project has been agreed.

This side of Christmas, if the weather allows around 18 fruits trees will be planted and the orchard established. It is hoped that there will be 4 different varieties of apple tree, 3 of pear, 4 of plum and an assortment including greengage, peach, fig and quince trees.

A sign will also be installed identifying each tree, giving details of when the fruit should be harvested and what you can do with each type of fruit. Watch out for more information about the planting and tree types.

The volunteers including Deb and Darren cleared rubbish from around the Mulberry bush and cleaned the signs around the park of graffiti.

Each month Darren &Deb hold 2 advice sessions. At The Baptist Church on Junction Lane in South Ossett on the first Saturday of each month and Horbury Library on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Both sessions start at 10:15 and last until 11:30am or until residents have been seen.

We are also at the coffee mornings at Horbury’s Methodist Church on most Wednesday mornings. Please feel free to come and talk to us, we are here to try and help you with local issues.

If you have an issue that may require the help of your Member of Parliament – Simon Lightfoot MP; he can be contacted by – post at : Wakefield Constituency Office, 20-22 Cheapside, Wakefield, WF1 2TF, Telephone: 01924 682269, or email simon.lightwood.mp@parliament.uk
