🎄Week ending Saturday 10th December 2022 🎄

Christmas is gaining momentum & the big day is fast approaching. This is the first time in many a year that there has been a Christmas tree in South Ossett. Deb and Darren, working with residents from the Sowood area have had a wonderful tree installed just off Horbury Road close to South Terrace.

It is a 10-foot real tree, complete with battery operated lights and is available for residents to decorate and make their own. The tree will be replaced in the New Year by a rootball tree once the growing season starts, helping the environment and creating a community asset for many years to come.

We are also looking for another location for a real tree in the Teall Street towards Queen’s Drive area, in South Ossett, any ideas for next Christmas?

A new tree has also been planted in Horbury Bridge. The first tree installed on the green area was around 4 years ago and never really grew, so it was replaced. This second tree also did not do too well as it suffered from salt burn, which had been thrown up by passing traffic. The new tree is a cut one and will be replaced by a rootballed tree. So, the replacement tree is in its own raised bed, to help with the general poor soil condition and to help keep the tree moistened in dry weather. Fingers crossed. This tree is decorated with mains operated lights, so it always looks bright.

Thank you to the Pride in Horbury Bridge group for organising the ‘Carols around the Tree’ event and Friday evening. It was a very cold evening. There was hot coffee and mince pies as well as mulled wine. Many people attended and had a good old singalong. Santa was provided by Horbury Phoenix Rotary Club and did a cracking job.

The chocolate selection packs he gave out had been provided by Darren and Deb’s trade union UNITE. Over the past few weeks, we have given out around 250 chocolate packs. Horbury Victoria Band provided the music for the carol singing.

Whilst on the Christmas theme Darren and Deb were out ‘n’ about on Saturday morning with our Christmas selfie frame. Thank you to everyone including Nicki and Naomi from West Yorkshire Police who were patrolling the Ward this morning for having their picture taken. Watch out for more pictures as we continue our walkarounds over the next couple of weeks.

We would like to thank the Methodist Church and the Horbury Victoria Band. This morning, the carols were sung outdoors by the Methodist Singers, accompanied on the electric organ. The picture shows Darren and two others moving an incredibly heavy electric organ into position.

The Horbury Victoria Band were outside Boon’s on Queen Street and provided wonderful and festive Christmas entertainment.

On Friday afternoon around 12 people met with Darren and were joined by our MP Simon Lightwood. They started to deliver some Christmas cards and spoke with residents in the Horbury Bridge and Hawkingcroft area. These cards give a festive message and our contact details. More cards will be delivered in South Ossett over the next seven days or so. Thank you to everyone who has helped so far. Whilst out ‘n’ about, it gives us the opportunity to notice issues and report them directly to the Council for repair or action.

Following on from this, we both attended the opening of the Christmas display in the Redbox Gallery on Queens Street in Horbury town centre. This season’s theme is ‘Not Even a Mouse’ and is a series of locally crafted illuminated lanterns. With a colourful and festive feel, they really do brighten up the gallery. Created by local artists Helen Thomas and Tony Wade. More information can be found at Horbury Civic Society’s Facebook page.

Please do not forget to visit the red phone box in Horbury Bridge. Looking very festive & created by the Pride in Horbury Bridge group. Two great community assets in our Ward.

You may have noticed over the past few months, that Horbury Library has been covered in scaffolding with contractors working on the roof and building frontage. The scaffolding was down on Thursday and the building was looking magnificent. We understand that work has been completed on the roof, pointing and repair of the stonework and what looks like an overall clean.

Hopefully, early in the New Year, we should be able to give an update of the massive relocation and reopening of the Library in Ossett Town Hall.

We have noted that the skate park area of Carr Lodge Park has had the gate lock vandalised. This was reported on Facebook and Darren has logged this for repair. Please feel free to email or message Deb or Darren with any issue you may see across Horbury and South Ossett.

If you live outside of our Ward, you can report issues directly to your local Councillors. Details can be found at www.wakefield.gov.uk or by phoning 0345 8 506 506 or via ‘MyAccount’ on the Council’s website.

On Wednesday morning, we attended the last coffee morning of the year for the Senior Citizen’s Support Group. Around 150 seniors attended the session in Horbury Working Members Club, which was warm, friendly, and great opportunity to catch up with friends and others. If you know of anyone who would benefit from being a member of the group, please visit their website www.scsg.co.uk or telephone 01924 565859 during office hours.

It has been announced by the Government that Cold Weather Payments will be paid to eligible residents in Wakefield postcodes WF1, WF2, WF3, WF4, WF5 and WF12. So, if you are receiving Pension Credit, Income Support, some jobseeker’s and employment support allowances, Universal Credit or Support for Mortgage Interest, please check for further information by visiting www.gov.uk and searching ‘Cold Weather Payments’.

Today’s match between Horbury Town and Rossington Main was a victim of the cold weather and was cancelled. This match was sponsored by Darren and Deb and will be played at a later date. Hopefully when slightly warmer also! Currently Horbury Town are 3rd in the NCEL Division One league – Up the ‘Orbury!

If you are able to support the fundraising efforts of Southfield Close Neighbours. Christmas Lights, they have set up a JustGiving page at – www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/southfieldchristmaslights. You can see the Christmas Lights from the A642, Horbury bypass or by walking down Southfield Lane.

Do you know of any other great ideas like this across Horbury & South Ossett? If you do, please let us know so we can promote their activities.

Please keep safe and take care.
Darren & Deb
Working for our Communities, throughout the whole year!
