Week ending Saturday 4th November 2023

What will be the name of the next Storm to hit the UK, or more specifically Horbury & South Ossett? Well according to the METRO Newspaper the next storm will be called Debi – say no more. There is no date yet expected for Debi but watch this space. Speaking of wet weather … … …

Our attempts early on Saturday afternoon, to install this year’s Poppy display of the 700+ hand-knitted poppies have been thwarted by the recent storms. The ground in our memorial Park is so wet and sodden that the pegs used to secure the display to the ground would not stay fixed. Darren, Deb, Gwen and Malcolm struggled and eventually called it a day when the rain started to fall, and the poppies and the team were becoming muddy and bogged down.

We will regroup and hopefully try again later in the week. If it is not possible to install our planned display, we will ensure that the knitted poppies are cleaned, dried and stored safely until we can start work on plan B. Plan B will be to sew together all of the poppies and create a floor rug that can be used in the children’s area within the library. More info to follow, but please bear with us.

At 10:15am on Saturday morning we held our Councillor Advice session in South Ossett. Each month we hold two sessions, which give residents the opportunity to talk with us and raise issues concerning and affecting them. These sessions are vital for all Councillors, to get to understand what is going on in the wider community.

At 12 noon on Saturday, we popped down to meet with some of the residents of Southfield Close. We were there to present them with a cheque for £100, as a donation towards their Christmas Light display. We discussed their plans for this Christmas and their light switch on, which is planned for Saturday 2nd December – more information to follow over the next few weeks.

On the subject of Christmas, we have more information regarding the light switch-on in Ossett. Ossett Town Centre Partnership’s annual event is an all-day programme starting at 10am and continuing until 7pm that evening, with the lights switch-on at 5.30pm. Please visit their Facebook page for more information – www.Facebook.com/ossetttcp

Last Sunday afternoon the three of us attended Horbury WI’s Autumn fayre at the Cluntergate Centre. It was great to see a local community centre so full and buzzing with people who were enjoying the market atmosphere, a local pop-up café and grabbing a locally created gift idea.

We always try to support this type of community event and we will be at the St Mary’s Christmas Fayre next Saturday. The doors open at 10am and the event will continue until 4pm. Please visit St Mary’s Facebook page for more information, search St Mary’s Church Horbury Junction.

On Monday we started our support for this year’s annual RBL’s Poppy Appeal. Each day, between 5 & 6pm, for the next two-weeks, Monday to Saturday, two of us will be in the Co-op in Horbury selling poppies. Please stop by and buy a poppy and have a chat. Watch out for more information about Remembrance Sunday’s events across Horbury and Ossett, later this week on Facebook.

We would like to give out a special ‘Thank you’ to the resident who looks after the massive flower bed facing the ex-Bar Biccari restaurant. She approached us and asked if we could provide her with a load of wood-chippings, to finish off her great work and supress weed growth.

It was our pleasure to organise this, and the Council delivered and spread a significant amount of chippings on the flower bed. Thank you again for your hard work, please keep it up!

It was with some surprise that we received a press release from the Post Office informing us about a new Post Office facility being opened in the Manorfields area of town. This now means that we have 3 Post Office facilities in Horbury – on Queen Street, Bridge Road in Horbury Bridge and now within Seema Food Store on Manorfields Drive along with the Crown Post Office in Ossett town centre. It is important that we support all of our local businesses – use them or lose them!

On the subject of Post Offices, please be aware that the last posting dates for overseas mail will fast be approaching. You can find out more information at www.postoffice.co.uk

Are you a resident of Horbury and aged over 70 years? If yes, did you know you may be eligible for a Horbury Common Lands Trust Christmas Grant. Application forms and full details of who qualifies can be found online at – www.HorburyCommonLandsTrust.org.uk or by visiting Handyman DIY shop or the Cluntergate Centre. Applications need to be made by 30th November 2023.

On Wednesday, Darren met with the Horbury Pageant Players to hear about plans for their annual pantomime. It is Cinderella, oh yes, it is! Rehearsals are in full swing with the event being staged in February next year.

As a community we are very lucky to have three pantomimes on our doorstep. Details can be found at Ossett’s Priory Players and Wakefield Theatre’s productions by visiting their respective Facebook or website pages.

Recently there have been a couple of comments made on social media about homeless people camping at Horbury Lagoons. Wakefield Council’s Homeless Team visited and walked the entire area on the 23rd of October and no evidence was found of rough sleepers. The area will continue to be monitored. However, sleeping out in a public space is a personal choice and is not against the law. If you feel that someone needs help or assistance, please give Wakefield Council’s Homeless Team a call on 0345 8 506 506.

We get many issues raised regarding the parking of vehicles, especially cars in and around Horbury town centre and residential streets across Horbury & South Ossett. The blocking of dropped kerbs is not permitted and you could be issued a parking ticket for doing so. The dropped kerb outside of the shops at the junction of Queen Street and Horbury High Street is blocked many times per day.

Blocking this crossing point stops those with mobility issues, parents with prams and pushchairs of having a safe crossing place. Rule 243 of The Highway code gives full details of where you can and cannot park your vehicle - www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/waiting-and-parking-238-to-252 The Police and Traffic Wardens have been asked to patrol the area and issue tickets to those who disregard this and other parking restrictions.

On Friday event we attended the Slazenger’s Social Club’s annual bonfire and firework display. This amazing annual Horbury tradition was, as always, a real spectacular community event. Thank you to everyone involved in organising and staffing the event, without dedicated people like you, our community would be much poorer.
