Week ending Saturday 18th November 2023

Let’s start with a piece of amazing news that just shows what a great community Horbury, Sitlington & Ossett really are. Following on from the annual Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Sunday, our local Royal British Legion have announced that they have collected £63,976.70 – what an amazing total. A massive thank you has to be given to Malcolm Patterson, the Poppy Appeal Organiser and his entire team. Again, Thank you.

We hope you have had the opportunity to take a look at the poppy display in Memorial Park. The poppies will be there until Monday of next week, when they will be removed, dried and stored for use next year. Our poppy plans are now in hand for 2024. Watch this space for more information and how your community group can join in with our expanded Ward-wide plans. You may also have noticed our large and smaller metal ‘Tommy’s’. These are now in storage for future use. Watch this space again, as we have some plans that could come to fruition in the next month or so!

Carrying on the good news, we can report that after many years of trying, we are able to confirm that two local road improvements are now being consulted upon with local residents. Anything to do with highways can take years to come to fruition. If the consultation is successful, speed reduction methods will be introduced on Sowood Bends, in both directions. Addition speed pillows, more signage and road markings should help to remind drivers of the actual speed limit.

Please bear in mind that this is a major and very busy road between our two towns and as such, there are limitations to what can be done; life would be easier if drivers of all vehicle types just stuck to the speed limit or below it!

Bank Street in Horbury town centre, which is a very narrow residential street, is planned to become a one-way street, with a ban on HGV’s using this as a short cut. This improvement should reduce traffic flow and stop HGV’s causing issues on Bank Street and Tithe Barn Street.

If you wish to support or object to either scheme you can do so by emailing TrafficRegs@Wakefield.gov.uk using either Sowood Bends or Bank Street as the title line. Comments should be made by 1st December 2023 for Bank Street and 8th December for Sowood Bends.

Christmas trees across Horbury & South Ossett will be planted/installed on Thursday 23rd November. The traditional location on the corner of Highfield Road will be an 18 to 20’ tree with an additional three 10 to 12’ rooted trees being planted in Horbury Bridge, Southfield Close, Horbury Road in South Ossett and Fairfield Road outside Broadroyd House.

These additional trees will be rooted and should grow over the years to around 20’ or so. The trees on Highfield Road and Horbury Bridge will be decorated by the Council and the other trees will be looked after by local residents and community groups. For Christmas 2024, we have funding for another two rooted trees, and we are looking for locations. Any ideas? Please let us know your thoughts.

On the subject of Christmas, our two towns light switch ons are next week. Horbury goes first on Friday (24th November) with the event starting at 5pm on the car park outside The Methodist Church on Horbury High Street. Ossett’s event is on Saturday (25 November) starting with a Christmas Market. See local posters and Facebook pages for more information and updates.

The Horbury event is organised by your three local Councillors and sponsored by Horbury Common Lands Trust, UNITE the Union, Horbury & Ossett Phoenix Rotary Club and Santa of course.

Starting at 4pm on Friday 24th November, Horbury Library will be opening until 7pm. For an evening of crafting activities, a bran tub for the children and light refreshments for sale. Please support our local library.

Finally on the subject of Christmas, (well for now), on Tuesday, Darren attended the South Parade Primary School Christmas Fayre. This event was amazingly well attended with craft stall, refreshments and a raffle. It was a good evening out and gave Darren the opportunity to catch up with school staff and see how one of the district’s largest primary schools is performing and meeting the needs of our children.

Following on from this Darren went to the Friends of Illingworth Park meeting. Discussions were held about their Christmas activities and the plans for 2024. Date for your diary is the Illingworth Summer Gala – Sunday 2nd June.

We often get complaints regarding Wakefield District Housing (WDH) properties, from anti-social behaviour to untidy gardens and everything in between. WDH and Wakefield Council are two different organisations. Before we are able to help with WDH issues, you must first report the problem to WDH and allow them to take appropriate action. WDH’s contact number is 0345 8 507 507 and their complaints page on their website – www.wdh.co.uk/contactus/complaints

You will recall earlier in November, the Leader of Wakefield Council, Cllr Denise Jeffrey, wrote to the Secretary of State for Transport, Mr Mark Harper; requesting he funded the building of a railway station in Horbury or Ossett from the now defunct HS2 northern scheme funding. Cllr Jeffery wrote this letter to support our ongoing campaign to get this project moving. So far, we have not had a response from Mr Harper.

For your information the letter was supported by another letter from Darren, Deb and Gwen plus a letter of support from Jade Botterill, the Labour Party candidate for the new constituency of Ossett & Denby Dale. We’ll keep you posted.
