Week ending Saturday 25th November 2023

We saw a great post on social media a few days ago, which we copied and posted. The main theme of the post was to support your local High Streets. We, in Horbury and Ossett,, have access to two great High Streets that offer an amazing range of local independent shops which are supplemented by a couple of national brands. Local shops on local High Streets are great places for Christmas shopping!

The post went on to say, “If you spend it all online, we don’t know we don’t know what we’ll do cause we won’t stay on the High Street without customers like you” Very fine sentiments.

Over the last week, we have supported our local High Street and will continue to do so. Darren started with a visit to Horbury’s bookshop, firstly to see ‘Kammy’ Chris Kamara and bought his latest book. Followed by Deb who called in with her husband Andy for a new book by Millie Johnson.
Andy Nicholls has been selected as the Labour candidate for next May’s local elections for Wakefield Rural Ward. This includes the neighbouring villages of Middlestown, Netherton and Overton. We are sure that you’ll see Andy out ‘n’ about over the next few months and give him your support. If you live in Rural Ward and want to know more, you can visit Andy’s Facebook page – search ‘Andy Nicholls Rural Ward’.

The highlight of this week has to be the Christmas Light Switch on in Horbury on Friday, followed by Ossett’s event on Saturday. Friday’s event started with a litter pick in Horbury led by Deb & Gwen with a team of 8 volunteers. Six filled bags of rubbish were collected and removed from our streets. Thank you - a job well done.

The Horbury Light switch on was attended by hundreds of visitors with many, more standing on the pavements to see the light switch on. The Methodist Church’s Christmas Fayre was very busy filled with people out with their families looking for a bit of pre-Christmas fun. A great time was had by all, and funds raised for the church. The street lights and the trees in the Methodist Church grounds and on the corner of High Street & Highfield Road looked great. FYI this tree was affected by the high winds on Thursday, we have requested that it be inspected.

The Horbury Christmas Lights switch on is organised by your 3 local Labour Councillors and costs around £800 each year to host. We receive funding & support from Horbury & Ossett Phoenix Rotary Club, Horbury Common Lands Trust, Horbury Village Partnership, UNITE the Union and your Local Councillors.

We also would like to ‘thank’ Hickory’s restaurant for their involvement on the evening and to Horbury Pageant Players, who are part of the fabric of Horbury – see diary Dates for information about next production. Finally, thank you to all our volunteers – Graham, Fiona, Anne, Malcolm, Tony, Andy, Jade and Santa of course.

On the same night there were two other great Christmas events – so thank you to Horbury Library and The Cluntergate Centre for their craft activities and their support for their community.

On Thursday evening Darren, in his role as Chair of Horbury Churches Together, attended Horbury Academy Student Presentation evening. Over 60 students received awards for a whole range of academic and vocational subjects. This evening really does showcase the amazing skills and achievements of many young people from across Horbury and the surrounding towns and villages.

The guest speaker was retired Head Teacher of Horbury Primary School, Julie Tomlinson. Julie gave an inspirational talk about her school days and her life as a teacher and school leader. But did you know that she was also a Lioness?

Julie played for the England national football team in the early 1980s, where she was a very successful footballer. This was something that the majority of the audience did not know, but as Julie indicated, the women’s game has come a very long was over the last few years. Led by pioneers like Horbury’s very own Julie Tomlinson.

Last week, we gave some information about The Local Government Boundary Commissions for England’s (LGBCE) review of Wakefield electoral boundaries. We have been approached this week to give a little more information and the links needed so you can lodge your views in their review.

Basically, each Ward within the district should have around 13 to 14,000 residents, this ensures that the representation of residents to Councillors is circa 4600:1. Since the last review carried out in 2004, there have been many changes in population, due to people moving into the area, as well as new house building.

Currently, Darren, Deb and Gwen represent the Horbury & South Ossett Ward, which has around 11,500 residents. This makes us one of the smallest wards in the Wakefield District. This compares with several Wards having between 13 & 14,000. The review by LGBCE will even out the Ward numbers by moving or redrawing boundaries across the whole of the District.

You can find out more information by visiting LGBCE’s website at – www.lgbce.org.uk/all-reviews/wakefield or writing to them, with your views at – Review Officer (Wakefield), LGBCE, PO Box 133, Blyth, NE24 9FE. The closing date for your comments is the 29th January 2024.

You may have noticed that the road by Northgate was closed on Saturday. This was due to a burst water main. We understand that a large chunk of Horbury town centre and surrounding area was affected with a much reduced water pressure. Yorkshire Water’s contractors were onsite and appeared to have the repairs well under way when we were in the area. We understand that normal water pressure was returned by early Saturday afternoon.
