Week ending Saturday 20th January 2024

Well, it’s the 3rd week of January and the winter weather is definitely here and as they say in Yorkshire – ‘By ‘eck its cold!’ And we are told that another storm, Storm Isha, is heading towards Yorkshire. Rain and strong winds, so they say, are about to hit us!

Last Saturday, Deb and her hubby Andy joined the Walking fit for Ossett & Horbury group as they started the year with a walk that set off from Carr Lodge Park and headed towards Ossett Spa before returning to Horbury Town Centre – about 7km. Further details of this group and how you can join them in a walk can be found on their Facebook page - www.facebook.com/share/WrcXZJftZ3BMix6u/?mibextid=WC7FNe This and other events will form part of #OurYear2024 – search Facebook for more information.

We all take street lights on our roads for granted, often never even noticing that they are there. There are over 41,000 street lamps across the Wakefield District. However, once they fail to illuminate, we really do notice them. It is important to know that when a light is not working it needs reporting to the Council. Telling everyone that the light on your street is not working via social media, will not get them repaired.

If a bulb is faulty, the Council’s contractor AMEY will effect a repair. However, if there is an electrical supply problem, this is what affected The Fairfield area over Christmas, we need Northern Power Grid to restore the power. Northern Power Grid can take around 4 weeks to make the repair. We are told that this timescale is what the Government has laid down as acceptable.

The quickest way to report a fault is by calling Wakefield Council on 0345 8 506 506, directly to AMEY on 0800 783 1654 or on their website at https://wakefieldstreetlighting.amey.co.uk. It will only get repaired if it has been reported!

On Friday morning Darren, was in Horbury Old Town Hall and was able to see the repairs being carried out on our heritage building. We had requested that a survey be undertaken, and remedial repairs carried out. This work means that both Ossett & Horbury Town Halls are receiving investment by Wakefield Council.

In the Horbury Council Chamber, on the first floor, it appears that the roof has been repaired, and the ceiling is being restored. The pictures show some before and after work, with the water damaged areas being made good. We’ll keep you posted as the work progresses.

This week, the Police held their regular Police & Community Together (PACT) meeting. Horbury & South Ossett meeting was held on Thursday morning at the Methodist Church. A very wide range of topics were discussed from recent burglaries to anti-social behaviour, from speeding traffic to car parking, from litter and underpants being found in Stan Barstow Gardens. We did say a wide range of topics!

The next PACT meetings will be - OSSETT - on Tuesday 27th February starting at 7pm at New Spring Church and HORBURY - on Thursday 29th February 2024 starting at 6pm at the Methodist Church on Horbury High Street. All residents, business and community representatives are welcome to attend. More information can be found at - www.westyorkshire.police.uk/my-neighbourhood/wakefield/wakefield-west/events

Mid-week, Darren & Deb joined the newly created community group at Broad Royd House on Fairfield, for a cup of coffee and a great community natter. We were warmly welcomed, and we will be back over the next weeks and months, helping to support and grow this great new facility. Thank you to everyone involved and see you all soon.

There are activities each day Monday to Friday – see the picture for more details and if you’re in the area, why not pop in?

We are no doubt aware that you will have watched the recent ITV drama called Mr Bates vs The Post Office. What a scandal that everyone appears to have shown little interest until the TV drama. Thank you, ITV, and well done!

However, we must remember that most of our Post Offices, called Sub-Post Offices are small independent businesses, and they rely completely on our support and custom. So, if you are able, please support our Sub-Post Offices, they really are an important part of our community, and we need them now more than ever.

As you know, all three of us like a good cup of coffee and a bacon sandwich! On Saturday morning after we had been out ‘n’ about in Horbury town centre, we had lunch at Café Capri on Cluntergate. This picture of our lunch, says it all. When we had finished, each plate was empty.

Over the past few months, we as local Councillors have supported several local community groups to obtain grants from Wakefield Council, to enable the groups to grow or support their communities.

Recently we have been able to provide funds to the following groups – our local Food Bank to buy a commercial fridge and freezer. This grant was for around £1,500 and will be used to help provide more food items to those who use the Food Bank, including fresh and frozen food stuffs. Christ Church in South Ossett has been awarded around £500 to buy a new water boiler. This will allow them to offer more services to the groups that use their buildings.

Horbury Library has benefited from a £450 grant to buy arts & craft equipment. This is to help develop the craft groups that meet at the Library, both young and not so young. The two groups who provide the hanging baskets in Horbury town centre have been awarded around £2000 to continue their plans to brighten up the area with colourful summer planting in hanging baskets and planters.

These funds are in addition to the donations we have been able to obtain from our trade union, UNITE. Thank you to everyone involved in these amazing community groups.

We three spent Saturday afternoon in South Ossett, in the Teall Street and Haggs Hill areas. Whilst we were out delivering leaflets for Jade Botterill, our candidate in the overdue General Election, we noted lots of issues. Potholes, faded white lines and signage, blocked gullies and pavements in need of a good sweep. All of these issues have been reported to Wakefield Council and we expect remedies over the next few weeks.

It’s worth bearing in mind that pothole repairs in winter months can only be made if the ground is dry and not frozen. Temporary repairs will be made, followed by a more permanent repair if required, in the drier and warmer months.
