Week ending Saturday 10th February 2024

Busy week for Darren, Deb and Gwen as we get back into the swing of things after a relatively quiet New Year. Weather excepted, it has been a good week for getting out’n’about in the Ward and engaging with the Community.

The recent heavy rain has caused some water to pour off the M1 motorway and flow into the fields in the Haggs Hill area of South Ossett. This was reported to us as an issue by a resident as an issue and we have taken the matter up with the Environment Agency. We await their response, but in our experience this may not be quick.

Last Sunday was Horbury Churches Together annual Forum and lunch. The guest speaker this year was Mrs Pat Langham, who is a retired Head Teacher from Wakefield Girls High School in Wakefield.

A good lunch was had and Pat’s after lunch speech was humorous, fascinating and very well delivered. If you get the opportunity to hear her speak, take it up.

On Tuesday, Darren attended the first of two presentation sessions by Southfield Close Neighbours. The presentation was a cheque to the Memory Action Group. The amount raised was £750.00, which was their part of the overall total, plus £200 of Amazon vouchers. The second donation will be made in the next few weeks to Andy’s Man Club, watch this space. A massive thank you to Southfield Close Neighbours and their great community spirit.

The Memory Action Group is a drop-in service. The service offers refreshments, activities, games, information, support, day trips, entertainers and friendship. Offering peer support group for people living with dementia and their carers, set up in 2018 followed by the opening of a drop in centre.

Their ultimate vision for Wakefield District is for it to become totally dementia friendly so that people living with dementia are accepted and welcomed everywhere. What a great vision for our residents and District. More can be found in this recent Wakefield Express interview –

Carr Lodge Park is a very popular place to visit for both young and old. With more and more people driving into the park, we felt it was useful to remind people that there is a speed limit of 5 miles per hour. A new sign has recently been installed at the Sunroyd Entrance.

There is also a sign a little further in to the park, where vehicles, other than on official park business, should not pass.

Also brought to our attention last week, was the amount of dog walkers who allow their dogs to exercise in the children’s play area and the old skate park area. We have asked that some new signs be installed, asking dog walkers not to use these areas, as they are used by children.

As I am sure you know, we created the Horbury Dining Club way back in 2018. The idea is simple, a group of diners, usually around 15 to 20, visit a local restaurant and spend some money each month, in the local economy. At the end of each year, we award the best dining experience with a simple award. This month, a very snowy Thursday evening to be exact, we visited Calder Vale Hotel in Horbury Junction.

Around twenty diners experienced a special Thursday Pie Night. A great evening was had, with pie, mash, peas and a drink, or two of course. A great venue, great food and amazing value. If you would like to join the Dining Club on their next evening out, drop us a line and we’ll send you full details. Everyone is welcome. Let’s support Horbury’s great restaurants and pub venues.

For the last two weekends, all three of us have been out‘n’about, delivering our latest newsletter to homes. Last weekend we were in the Teall Street area of South Ossett and this week, we were in Horbury Junction. As well as delivering our leaflet we are able to identify issues that may be affecting those areas.

Whilst in Horbury Junction, we have reported a couple of potholes and areas that need to be swept due to litter, rubbish and tree detritus. We were also contacted by a resident of Saturday afternoon, thanking us for our leaflet and to tell us about the rubbish strewn around the Daw lane and Southfield Road area. This has been reported and hopefully it will be cleaned over the next week or so. Thank you to the resident for taking the time to make contact, it is greatly appreciated.

On Monday evening, Darren and Deb attended the monthly meeting of the Horbury Village Partnership. This group of businesses, residents and community groups comes together to promote Horbury. This month we discussed and agreed to fund the hanging baskets for Horbury Town Centre this summer. This project, which cost over £3,500 is a joint venture between Horbury Village Partnership and Horbury Civic Society.

Darren was also able to confirm that the Council will be providing 9 new planters in various key locations. The planters will not only create a focal floral display but they will also discourage rogue parking is a couple of areas. It was hoped that the planters will be in place for late spring and will feature edible planting and some dwarf fruit trees. Watch this space for more information over the next few weeks.

There are two other greatly anticipated projects being fronted by the partnership. The first one is a new mural for the ‘white wall’ on the corner of Queen Street and entrance to the car park. This will feature a depiction of shops and businesses on Queen Street, encouraging shoppers to venture a little further afield. The other project is the Horbury/Hollywood sign, which will be installed on Stan Barstow gardens. These two new and exciting art projects are due to be completed in time for spring/summer 2024. Watch this space.

On Tuesday evening, Darren and Gwen were at the Pride in Horbury Bridge community group. This small group of people are a real driving force in the village and they make Horbury Bridge a great place to visit and experience. Plans are afoot, for the 100th Anniversary of the passing of Sabine Baring-Gould. As we are sure you are aware the Reverend Baring-Gould lived in Horbury Bridge and whilst there, wrote Onward Christian Soldiers.

But did you also know that whilst he was here in Horbury Bridge he met a local lass, called Grace, who he married and had 15, yes 15 children. You can find out more about this interesting character at –
