Week ending Saturday 24th February 2024

Is it winter or is it spring? If the weather does not know what the season is, how are we supposed to know which coat to wear! The snowdrops, daffodils and crocus’s are in bloom everywhere, the daffodils are certainly a bit early and we saw some tulips poking their heads above the soil too. Roll on Summer.

Horbury seems to be the place where everyone wants to convert an old building into new apartments for town centre living. We are aware of two recent applications for such conversions. If you would like to show your support or object to the two projects, here are the details.

The former school building on School Lane, just off High Street is for a building conversion into 9 apartments. Application Number 23/02306/FUL. The second application is 23/02152/FUL for the creation of 11 apartments in the old Chapel on the corner of Tithe Barn street and Westfield Road.

If you would like more information about either applications including internal layouts, please visit - https://planning.wakefield.gov.uk/online-applications/ & enter the above application number into the search box.

This week, West Yorkshire Police conducted some parking patrols on Highfields Road. They spoke with the drivers who felt it was appropriate to park in the bus lane and on Double Yellow Lines, to either drop off or collect their children from school. We have asked the Police to do the same task on Tithe Barn Street, on Peel street and at the bottom on Queen street.

On Queen Street, drivers feel it is appropriate to park and block the crossing point, close to the Handyman DIY Shop on a daily basis.

The Highway Code states – Rule 243 – Do not stop or park - where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair users and powered mobility vehicles. More information about parking at the roadside can be found at - www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/waiting-and-parking-238-to-252

On the subject of Police, The PACT (Police and Communities Together) meeting for the Ossett & Gawthorpe residents will be held at New Spring Church, Illingworth Street on Tuesday 27th February, starting at 7pm.

The meeting for Horbury & South Ossett residents will be on Thursday 29 February at The Methodist Church, starting at 6pm. Both meetings will last 1 hour and is your opportunity to raise issues affecting you.

We often get asked about trees, especially the ones that are growing over a resident’s property. There is no easy answer to this problem. The tree owner is under no legal obligation to cut the tree back even if it is causing you issues or blocking your light. As long as the tree is healthy, the owner does not have to comply with your wishes.

However, there is a big however here. You do have the right to remove any branches that are growing over your property. This would be at your cost and you should take professional advice first before removing any large boughs or branches. You can find out much more information about what you can do and cannot do at the Royal Horticulture’s website - www.rhs.org.uk/plants/types/trees/the-law

Earlier in the week, we posted on Facebook about Food Waste Collection. We thought it was well worth repeating the details here. In the Wakefield District, your food waste does not go to landfill. Once it reaches our site in South Kirkby, we separate your food waste from your green household waste bin by machine.

We then use a process called anaerobic digestion, to turn your food waste into electricity. This removes the need to have food waste bins and reduces the amount of lorries we have on the road, reducing emissions!

On the subject of recycling, don’t forget you can drop off your small electrical appliances at Horbury Library. From there, they are collected and safely recycled, which reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

Another simple but effective service from Wakefield Council. If you would like to know more about how Wakefield recycles your household waste please visit - www.wakefield.gov.uk/bins-recycling-and-environmental-health/

Over the last few weeks, we have been conducting Ward Walks. Whilst we have been out’n’about, we have been delivering our latest newsletter and taking note of issues that need some attention. So far, we have visited the area of Teall Street, Fairfield and Sowood and most surrounding streets, Horbury Junction, Horbury Bridge, Hawkingcroft, much of Manorfields and parts of Horbury Town Centre.

We’ll be out in other areas over the next few weekends. Please say hello and have a chat if you see us down your street.

In March, we intend to restart our Community Litter picking group. Weather permitting, we will be out’n’about on a Tuesday morning clearing litter and other such stuff from our roadsides and grass verges. Watch this space and please feel free to join us. The session starts at 10am and lasts about 90 minutes. In this short time we can make an amazing difference.

On Wednesday, all three of us called in to the newly refurbished Broad Royd House Community Centre and joined the regulars for a much needed cup of coffee. The centre is open Monday to Friday and has a whole series of events and activities. If you or someone you know, who lives in the Fairfield and surrounding area and would like some company and chat, why not get them to call in?

If you’re looking for something to do on a Monday afternoon. Why not call into Horbury Library. From 2.15pm for one hour. They have something called ‘Meet Up Mondays’. This is a time when you can meet up with friends and have a coffee and enjoy a range of free board games and similar activities. If you would like more information why not give the library a call on 01924 303060 or email them at – HorburyLibrary@Wakefield.gov.uk

On Thursday, our amazing Local Food Bank took delivery of a commercial fridge and separate freezer. These were purchased after we submitted a grant to Wakefield Council.

The grant was for around £2,000 and will allow them over the next few weeks to offer a wider range of foodstuffs to those less fortunate and in need of help. This is one of many community groups we have been able to support with grant applications and awards. If you feel we could help your community group, please drop us an email with details of your project to – TalkToUs@mail.co.uk

Finally this week, please put this date in your diary and prepare for a great Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday 30th March in Illingworth Park.

The event is organised by Illingworth Park Friends Group and sponsored by Cllr Darren Byford. An amazing group of volunteers who do a cracking job in their local park. More information can be found on their Facebook page or at www.IllingworthPark.org.uk
