~~~~ Week ending Saturday 6th April 2024 ~~~~
You may have seen comments about a Travellers site being built on some land off Green Lane towards the M1. This land sale is a private transaction, and the Council & not involved.
The land was sold ‘as in’ greenbelt and currently used for agriculture. Any change of use will need Planning Permission and then full details will have to be made public. Planning Permission is not a quick process.
As we said earlier, this is not something that the Council have been involved with and at this stage we do not know the facts from rumours.
We three Councillors would not support any change of land use. Once we have more information, we will of course make it known - watch this space.
We started this week with a visit to the 61st Annual World Coal Carrying Championships in Gawthorpe.
Not our Ward, but a very close neighbour and we wanted to show support to those taking part, some from Horbury & South Ossett and to the amazing team of volunteers, led by Duncan Smith. Carrying the coal bag looked easy, compared with the organising that went into hosting this brilliant event!
Councillor Page’s, husband David took part in the Veterans Race and was, we are told the oldest person to take part. What an amazing achievement. We are not sure that Darren, Deb or Gwen could even pick up a 50kg bag of coal never mind run with one. Hopefully, we’ll be back next year, along with David.
On Tuesday morning we three, along with 3 other volunteers, held our litter pick, meeting at the top of Hawkingcroft in Horbury Bridge. We spent one hour working a stretch of road and verge side up Quarry Hill and down towards the railway bridge – about 250 metres.
In that very small space, we cleared 12 bags of rubbish, and only cleared a fraction of what was there! The usual assortment of plastic bottles, pop cans, empty pizza boxes to name but a few of the items we found. A massive thank you to the Council who cleared away many of the bags within minutes of collection, as the refuse truck was passing.
Hopefully we’ll be back on Quarry Hill in the next few weeks, but next Tuesday, all being well, we’ll be on Storrs Hill, from Horbury Junction and working our way up towards the lay by. If you fancy joining us for 1 hour, just turn up with gloves and sensible footwear, we’ll provide everything else.
A special thank you must go to the staff at the Gate House Café on Quarry Hill, as they provided the volunteers with a hot drink as we worked along the roadside. If you are in the area and you want a great coffee and a snack, call in and say hello.
Following on from the litter pick, we requested a full pavement and gutter sweep and the collection of some abandoned temporary road signage. The Council attended the area and completed both tasks a few days later.
Finally, on the subject of litter picking, we will only pick on Council owned land. Private owned land is not something we can do. Private land includes areas and verges owned by Network Rail, Environment Agency and WDH to name but a few. It is their responsibility to keep their land free from rubbish.
Towards the end of last year, a new metal Tommy silhouette was installed in Memorial Park by the old Town Hall in Horbury.
This installation was done by plastic tie wraps around the flagpole, as a quick solution until a permanent installation could be done.
Recently, you may have noticed that Tommy has moved and is now secured in his permanent home, in the flower bed by the War Memorial. This was done by the Council’s StreetScene team, for which we say ‘Thank you’.
As you will know, this year is the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. “The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history” – Courtesy of Wikipedia
